when these were first announced, i was interested, but wary of the wheel arrangement.  i had the PA's with the blind (flangeless) wheel on the interior of each set.  this caused the trucks to overhang in my O54 curves and switches so much that the blind wheel visibly and audibly left the track and then rerailed when reaching straight track.  my E6's from lionel had the blind wheel in the middle of the set and behaved wonderfully on switches and curves.

i could get no data on what these E9's would have, so i did not preorder.

once they began to arrive i was able to get a read on the wheel sets (all flanged!) and made the decision to get a UP set to head my City of Portland.

alas, by then all my usual sources were out of UP's.

the forum to the rescue.  in response to a post asking for sourcing help, TRK pointed me to Nicholas Smith.  I had never done business with them, but the online process was clean.  i ordered on a friday and had them by the following wed.  great price, too.  family visitors kept me from doing anything with them until now.

i am not as particular (nor as peculiar, LOL) as lee willis, so the detail looks fine to me and the sounds are good.  i probably rode behind them as a kid on the City of Portland, but i can't remember horn details.  what is there works for me.  as lee points out, the smoke is good.

TRK asked me to post photos and video if i got them.  there have probably been enough photos, but i did produce a quick video.  it is in HD, so clicking through to Vimeo will probably produce a better experience.

"Who makes the cars ?"

7 of the cars are from the lionel anniversary set that included the PA's and feature a stationsounds diner (baggage, combination, coach, stationsounds diner, two domes, obs).  there is an extra lionel diner and coach (from some 2 Pak offering), an MTH RE car, and an RK sleeper.

these are 15" cars.  longer cars just don't look well on my O54 curves.

Really nice looking train!!  I am green with envy about the passenger cars you have.  My cars, now an A-B-A with the additional of a near-perfect match MTH unit, awaits arrival, someday, or the UP and Olympian 4-car packs I ordered at the same time from the same page of the catalog.

Beyond agreeing completely on how great they look, I also think there is something extra nice about owning a model of a train you rode on as a kid.  My model brings back all sorts of memories of our trek out to California and Disneyland on the City of LA.

I was just comparing the shape of the nose of the new Lionel  E8s and 9s with the shape of the nose of the Lionel F3s and F7s. The actual shape of the nose should be the same just like the prototypes. The Lionel F units have the correct nose shape however their E unit nose shape is different but not noticeable until you compare the two engine noses side by side or one above the other. See what you folks think.

Lionel got this one right with the roof details and the Union Pacific lettering on the nose - details often overlooked or ignored by other manufacturers.  The only part I can take issue with are what some observed to be too narrow a nose - producing a line down the center of the nose that may remind some of early E units but should not be found on an E-9.  Still, Lionel did overall great work with this piece.  Now if Atlas could make City of Los Angeles scale passenger cars.
