Picked up this motor along with two dozen others at an auction. I recognize all of them as Marx except this one. It doesn't look like any Lionel I've ever seen, and usually Lionel has their name on everything they've produced. American Flyer maybe? It doesn't run, but the lever on top chatters up and down when power is applied. I have no idea what the purpose of that is.

Any help or clues will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

That is the reverse actuator lever. Not sure 2 or 3 position reverse. I have one but can't remember any details, as its been a while since i worked on it. I never did get it to work correctly. Ty wrapped it in forward. I'll try to get it out and see if I can make any progress now, sense I'm retired.

Yes, and thank you UKAFLYER, as it certainly is a Burlington Zephyr 9900 motor. And I find it was made in 1935 only. There was an aluminum version along with the pressed steel units, but it seems the motor was the same on both.

The thing is mainly riveted together, so I'm not sure how deep I can get into it. But Chris, if I do get it running, I'll certainly try that reversing action. I think the points in the front are pitted, which is why the lever probably chatters. And since that's the only thing on it that seems to be removable without firing up my drill press, I'll try to clean them up.

I finally got mine back out to see if I could get the reverse to work. Success after lots of fine tuning the pressure of the three contacts in the reverse unit, as well as making sure the pendulum pivots freely. The adjustment took a lot of patience. Its been performing correctly for 2 or 3 months now. Mine is in a 4629 streamline 2-4-4.
