PICKED MINE UP YESTERDAY, RUNS GREAT. THE REAL SURPRISE IS MTH SHIPPED THIS ENGINE WITH STATION STOPS AS THIS ENGINE WAS USED ON THE L.I.R.R. FOR SHORT LINE PASSENGER SERVICE. WHEN USING THE ENGINE IN DCS MODE YOU NEED TO USE THE MTC SOFT KEY TO ACTIVATE THE STATION STOPS. YOU WILL NEED TO REFERENCE PAGES 142 / 143 IN THE DCS OPERATORS MANUAL FOR THE EXPLANATION OF THE SOFT KEYS. i WAS ABLE TO ACTIVATE A ROUTE WITH DETAIL STATION ANNOUNCEMENTS AND AUTOMATIC OPERATION. REALLY COOL. I JUST STARTED LEARNING OF THIS AN HOUR AGO AND WILL NEED TO PRACTICE SOME MORE AS I AM NOT WELL VERSED IN SUBWAY AND TROLLEY OPERATION WHERE THESE KEYS ARE REGULARLY USED IN DCS.

IF YOU BOUGHT ONE ITS REALLY COOL SO ENJOY.

L.I.TRAIN--I would be forever grateful if you could shoot and post video of this train in action, including passenger stops! I simply must have a LIRR passenger train to relive my days going back and forth to Hofstra in Hempstead. (Class of '76!) I'd love to hear what the stops are.

It should have been assigned as a freight engine. What's the matter with these people working at MTH?

We have no stations nor does MTH offer any accurate P72 commuter cars to go with it.

Arrives tomorrow.  Sound file needs to change to the previous MP15 I guess?  It was a freight engine about 95% of the time in it's early days. So lets see all your LIRR stations and commuter cars!

I SURE remember the MP15s on passenger service nearly exclusively in the "early days". Then again, there wasn't much freight service out at the far East End in the Hamptons. I don't even think there is ANY freight service that far out today. Last customer in East Hampton switched to trucks a few years ago.

I thought this engine was used for short line passenger service? Actually--it doesn't matter to me. If it has passenger stations--especially in AUTOMODE like the subways--that is a slam dunk, even as a fantasy train.

The LIRR ran Scoot trains on several lines. One in particular was the Greenport Scoot that ran from Ronkonkoma to Greenport. They used RS-3's originally and F units with cab control. The switched to MP-15's in the later years.

Here's a 2-car train of steam cars is laying up westbound at Greenport station behind Alco RS1 #463 awaiting its departure time in August, 1972. This was NOT a shuttle train, but the actual Jamaica to Greenport and return series of trains mentioned above.

If you like a "low-speed" ride east of Riverhead, then you'd have loved a ride I took on train #204/#211 out to Greenport and back in the hot, sweltering days of August, 1972.

Two "ping-pong" cars pulled behind an ALCO RS1.  No air conditioning.  Front doors, rear doors and vestibule doors wide-open.  Windows open.  Anything to suck in a breeze.  Wonderful feeling as you sweated into a wet mass, then had dust and dirt blow in on you from the trackside potato fields, giving you and the seats and everything else inside the car a nice coating.

Add to that, the coup de gras:  the conductor sitting in the last bench seat of the rear car . . .. smoking a cigar and spitting on the floor between his legs every few puffs. Ahh . . . . Main Line railroading at its best!  Dave Keller

Ah, the glamour of rail travel!  A regular Orient Express, no?

Oh wait: if like the subways, it will work in AUTO MODE! If that's right, auto mode can be used with a z500 transformer by pushing Bel/Horn keys--that's how I run my subways! This would be awesome! What number engine did you buy LI TRAIN?.

PDX

The operators manual goes into detail on how this engine operates in AC Conventional mode and the MTH Z-500 is listed as an acceptable transformer. BTW I got #162.

Steve:

If I understand you correctly, you are using softkeys to set the train into auto mode, where it runs and stops and makes station announcements everytime it stops, without you pushing any additional buttons after you set it in motion. Is that right? If so, that's auto mode like subways run, and it can be programmed with a transformer.

MTH Just sent me this info
Station Stop Operation
The following information explains how to use the Proto-Sound 2.0 system in command
mode when running trains equipped with Station Stop Proto-Effects. Appropriate mod-
els include Su
bway
Cars, PCC car and Trolley cars.
Automatic Operation
For automatic mode behavior, specific station stops and distances between them can be
programmed and saved. The process for this, or “learn” mode is outlined in the follow-
ing steps.
1. The user presses MLM to enter “learn” mode.
2. The trolley is driven to the track location for where the first stop will be stored.
3. The user will select the specific stop to be programmed using the LST softkey.
4. The stop will be saved by pressing the SAV softkey.
5. Steps 2-4 are repeated for the remaining stops to be programmed. Stops must be
stored in sequence as is required in conventional mode. Interim stops are removed from
availability in the stop list.
6. After the last stop is programmed, the sequence is saved as either out and back (OAB)
or loop by pressing a softkey. For OAB, the user simply saves the sequence at the last
programmed stop prior to moving the trolley (by either pressing SAV twice or pressing
the SOB softkey). For loop, the trolley must be moved in the forward direction back to
the original point of origin and saved as a loop (SLP softkey or SAV after pressing LST
and sounding the first station again).
The user can toggle in and out of “automatic mode” via a softkey. This key will simu-
late the B-W-W command used to enter and exit automatic behavior similar to the B-W-
W command in conventional mode. NOTE – If the user toggles back into Auto mode
from Manual mode they will have to drive the engine to the first station saved during
Learn mode and ensure the engine is in the correct directional state (Forward or Reverse).
While operating in automatic mode, the user can toggle between “all stops” and “ran-
dom stops” via the FAR softkey.
DCS Command System User’s Guide

Station Stop Operation
Manual Operation
In “manual mode” the user will initiate a stop sound sequence through the following
method:
Press the MMM softkey to enter the Manual Mode Menu. Press the FSS softkey to
announce the next stop. Every press of the FSS softkey will play the next available sta-
tion announcement. Once the desired stop announcement has been made, the system is
armed and will play the sound sequence for the selected stop the next time the trolley
reaches ZV. When the engine departs that station the announcement for the next station
will be made automatically. If the user wishes the engine to stop at this station press the
ARM softkey. If the user does not wish to stop at this station then press the FSS softkey
until the appropriate station announcement is called.
Once a specific stop is selected, subsequent stop selections override the previous one.
Therefore, the user can select a specific stop and then change this request simply by
selecting a different stop by pressing the FSS softkey.
Once a stop sequence is saved as a loop, the user can toggle between OAB and loop
behavior via the FOL softkey.

Thanks, Charlie. That's my understanding too, and it will also work with transformer buttons (I think one bell two horns puts it in auto mode.)

LIRR Train said he bought engine 162 and it came with Station stop effects. What I'm trying to determine is whether the other two engines also shipped with station stops, or with the normal PSA announcements.

Hey Zach--Thanks so much!  So, it sounds like this train runs the same as subway trains, with individual stops. Have you tried the train in auto mode where it runs and stops at stations on its own?

Two other questions for whomever knows: Did the prototype have an M under the window? Is that the place for the decal? I assume Charlie et al got it right and it did not say Long Island on the side.

And second: does anyone have engine 171, and if so, does it have the same kind of station subway style stops as this engine?

Thanks again, Zach! Watch the closing doors! :-)

Thanks! When you  have a moment, I'd love to see and hear her run if you are able to post some video! :-)

Anybody have a decal source for that MTA M on the prototype? I can't see it on Island Modelworks.

I had made "M" decals for the GP-38s that came out without logos and was selling them on ebay. I will be making them again for the blue and white MP15 and also I need to make them for the Alco (PA?) that came out last spring. I will post some pics when i get time to do them, hopefully this week and I will make them available for sale if people want them.

Yes that is Nassau hobby.

Pilot on my 171 is bent up into the frame  Needs a little forming adjustment

Same here. I had 4 quality fails, unit going back. More later. M' s can be printed out on your PC.

Hmmmm.  Thanks. I wonder if these problems are specific to engine 171, or was that another engine number?

Very excited now that the decals from Island model works came today for my blue and white unit.

The other unit is from the first run a few years ago. Decals also Island model works.

Hoping we see the GP 38s again too. Great stuff, all the custom runs. 20180221_18011720180221_18001420180221_17584920180221_175909ps

Very cool. Have you run the 170 with the station automode stops? Would love to see that.

BTW, I looked on ModelWorks couldn't find those decals. Will have to look again.

Station sounds are on the MTH site here - https://mthtrains.com/sites/de...180221a-webckout.mp3

IMW decals are incorrect. Railroad should not be on them also the fonts are incorrect. O should not be round. Lower case letters were never used.

More to follow plus freight sound / soft key changes coming to correct several over sites.

REV up/dwn and brake sounds missing among other issues.

Hats off to Nassau Hobbies and crew. I had several quality issues and they quickly replaced unit #170 within 2 days time. Lightning fast service, Thanks Charlie!

Yeah, well I couldn't even find them there. Do you have a suggestion for decals that are correct? That would be appreciated. Although I don't mind creating a fantasy piece either. I just don't want it bare.
