Is this a postwar Lionel #51 Navy Yard switcher with a mechanical E-unit, or the Modern Era reissue with an electronic e-unit?
I was told this unit was made in the 1955-1956+/- there is a little silver switch on the side that moves up & down that directs the engine. The wire has some type of cloth covering, not what you see today. I told my friend that there was someone on this forum that could help with this engine
Thanks for you help
Brent
You have the original PW version. The E-Unit likely just needs to be rebuilt, that's the part that allows it to change directions.
Be careful handling that engine!
Originally there are struts (mullions) in the windows on each side of the cab.
If they are still there, they are very fragile, and people seem to naturally pick up the engine in a way that causes them to break (finger pressure).
If the engine still has them, it is much more desirable to collectors.
If they are gone, glue-in replacements are available.
Modern era Lionel beefed up those struts to make them much stronger.
As John wrote, your e-unit probably can be rebuilt.
If you want a new one, look for part #100-6
Thanks for the advice guys, I tried to post a picture showing the engine without the cab but it would not load. The part is missing.
My friend has 2 of these switchers, the other is in almost "mint" condition windows are 100% , runs really well. We took the cab off the second switcher is how I know the part is not there, only wires.
I will contact to see if he wants it fixed. Unlike me, he has skilles and will probably want to install the part himself.
CW and Gunrunner, do either happen to have the part or know where it can be bought?
Thanks for all your help
Brent
The Train Tender has it listed, it's part number 100-6. I'm sure other on-line parts guys have it as well.

Do you have this part? If not I will order from The Train Tender. If you do, please reply via my email. Thanks for the advice on handling the engine, so far it is great shape but missing this part.

Sorry, I don't sell.
I don't have that part, but I do very little PW work.

gunrunner,
thanks for the heads up on "the Train Tender" I contacted them via email this weekend and the part was shipped today 8/11/14. I was a little surprised at the early ship date because I know they do not have the money yet.
Thanks
Brent
Jeff's a great guy and normally ships on the spot, especially for smaller orders. Obviously, his experience mirrors mine and he finds most train folks are honest and won't stick him.
