So what's the neatest train room or building you've seen or heard about that was used for a model train layout ?

My late father told me that a neighborhood friend (same neighborhood I currently live in) had two old wooden boxcars side by side connected with the walls knocked out, with an "O" gauge layout in them.I'm guessing this was sometime  in the 1950's.

I live beside that same house he was talking about, and all I have seen are some old cross ties and tie plates, but no sign of the boxcars .I'm guessing they were taken out years ago since I've lived in my house 20 years now.

There was a guy some years ago who had a cab of a F unit lowered into his basement as the house was being built. He used the cab to control his very large HO layout. There was an article in MRR but I can't tell you what year. It was pretty amazing.

IT was also in Model Railroading back in the early 1990's! he also modeled a 1:1 portion of a KCS sleeper next to it as well!

David1, I saw that article about the F unit cab in the basement....also have seen

articles about a guy who had property beside tracks (think in plains states or Texas)

and had a restored caboose (MKT, T&P, or ?) sitting beside tracks with a layout in it, and, of course, another about a layout in a purchased, moved, and restored RR station...don't remember any details.  Saw another article about a narrow gauge

PRR affiliate, the Ohio River and Western, where a guy bought a really rotted out passenger car, that had set outside on private property for years,  restored half of it,

possibly, because that was the most parts that could be found, including very ornate trim,  and installed it, I think, IN an antique shop in one of the towns served by the OR&W.  Article was memorable because he described himself and others disassembling the remains in the heat of summer, it was full of tossed out junk, and up against a very smelly privy.

I think that one of the best buildings for a train layout is a remodeled barn.  The "Train Barn" in Portage, MI housed a rather large layout upstairs and a hobby store/museum downstairs.  The "Royal Gorge" (complete with custom bridge) was a scenic highlight and the gorge went all the way to the floor of the lower level.  You don't get to do that in most buildings.  I was sad when I heard that Seth had decided to retire and close the store.

(Actually the only one,)

A friend and I were talking about containers a couple of weeks ago as they're inexpensive relative to a steel or conventional building (you still have to put down a concrete slab, though.) I like how you did this, complete with covered parking. Do you have interior shots?

Where in China?    I'm in Shanghai right now and soon to travel to Guangzhau and then Hong Kong.

Zhuhai, right next to Macau.  If you can pass through Zhuhai on the way to HK we would love to have you visit.
