I have a nearly new MTH late model PS2 switcher that has poor speed control at low speed. Anything below 10 smph and it seems to lurch/stagger with each chuff. If it is stopped, applying speed causes it to jump forward instead of smooth acceleration. In conventional with speed control off, I was unable to learn anything. It took off and stalled at the first switch it crossed. This doesn't happen in DCS mode. I noticed that all of the track electrical interface occurs in the tender. Both the pickup rollers and the little copper wiper for the outer rail connection. On the test track I cleaned the wiper to wheel axle contact and bent the wipers a little to improve contact pressure. That seemed to work really well. But after a few laps on the track things got bad again. With the shell off I turned the flywheel and didn't feel any binding.

Am I right in adding additional wipers to improve the return signal? I noticed in a photo of the PS3 version MTH added dual wipers that contact the wheels and not the axles.

Thanks!

I would think that adding more electrical contact points would improve things - I have done that many times with lightweight floodlight cars, tenders, etc. and it always helped.

"Anything below 10 smph and it seems to lurch/stagger with each chuff." I assume there is a cam located on either the engine or tender that is used to provide switch actuation for the chuffing. If that's the case, it sounds like a touch of lightweight grease is in order.

Question: have you cleaned the wheels yet? At least one of the wheels appears to have a layer of crud on it. That's always step 1 for me!

Well, for starters, it can’t be nearly new if it’s PS2. It’s nearly 20 years old. George is correct. You need to first clean & lube things before attempting to diagnose. Clean the wheels, the rollers, and lube everything. Pickup rollers, & wipers need lube too. Conductive oil best here. Could be other issues, but always start simple and work your way towards the more difficult diagnosis. Check & make sure tether is fully seated. Also, post up the item # for better understanding of the exact model you’re working on.
