Hi Everyone,  I am hoping to semi-restore a UP 2023 engine.  I don't want to repaint it, I prefer to keep it in its 1950 used look, however after cleaning the shell, there is not much left of the lettering, especially the numbers.  In fact, while the letters are heat stamped, on one side of the shell, the numbers don't having any indents at all (bottom picture)!

I am hoping to get some advice on how to add some color to the letters and numbers that have the heat stamping indents as well as adding numbers to the side that has no indent at all.

One idea I had for the numbers with out indents was to create a mask with the 2023, perhaps using Word to print the letters in reverse color (white on black) and cut the numbers out using a hobby knife.  I understand that the RomanS font may be the closest match. I would need to use fairly think paper.  I could then air-brush over the mask.  Perhaps I could make a decal, not sure if there is decal paper that I could print the numbers onto.

I was going to try and dry brush paint into the indents for the other letters, am open for ideas here as well.

What color red would be a good match?

The other question, is that when I got the shell, it was covered with a white looking substance, I believe some call it a mold.  I got most of it off the shell, but there is still some in the cracks and crevices.  Are there any good ways to remove this crud?

MaNY THANKS FOR YOUR HELP!

Dave

There is a person on choochooauctions.com who sells restoration decals for that loco in red or black. I'd go that route if I were you.

Get the shell as clean as you can. Remove as much of that white substance as you can, then give the shell a coat of Testors gloss clear. Apply the decals and then another coat (or two) of gloss clear. Follow that with a coat of semi-gloss or satin clear. Below is the address.

Hi Guys, thanks for the help! I am going to get both sets of decals/dry transfers.  I think I will redo the head decal as well.   I will post some pictures as I progress on this restoration. On removing the white crud,  I had read about using a light oil, and it seemed to work. All the best, Dave
