Merry Christmas Guys,

I decided to pull out my old (new) PS1 Standard Gauge 381 State Car set to run this Christmas season.  I've never run this engine before and I want to make certain that I do not accidentally cause myself issues.  Thus I have a few questions:

1. The PS1 board seems to be operating fine as I get 2 dings at start up and at times I can get additional sounds.  I'm using an old ZW 275 transformer, but looking for a MTH Z4000.   The engine only runs in forward and I can't seem to figure out just how to cycle the transformer to get it back to full operational state (default).   Could someone please explain exactly what I must do?

2. I purchased a BCR but have reservations in putting it in.  Some of the local train shop owners have differing opinions and have only confounded what I should do.  One fellow was adamant that I should NOT use a BCR as it was designed for PS2 and beyond applications.  He stated that he has seen PS1 boards fried due to their use.  Thus why I'm here on this site asking for the real story from the experts in this area, should I install a BCR into this engine?  I have the original battery as well, should I use this instead?

3. I've made up a 10 amp fuse to go between the transformer and track by rigging up a 10amp AGC car fuse (glass tube fuse) to the center rail.  My question is, will this do the job or should I purchase something that is commercially sold and if so from where?

Any additional advice would be appreciated!

Thanks!

The BCR will not "Fry" the PS-1 board.  You can use it, though I would recommend using a new battery to get the Reset done and confirm operation.  Using a new 9V alkaline is fine for testing and reset.

Remove and install new battery.  Power up around 12V and let it start up.  Lower voltage to below 10V and use the direction button.  It should now cycle in all directions states.  If not and style only forward, you need to let us know if every direction state is fwd, or it there are neutral states also.

To do the Reset 18 follow the instructions.  Raising an lower the voltage AFTER first start up while in reset state.  18 times until you hear 3 clanks and 3 dings.  Than press whistle button and hold until you hear clear bell.   G

Hello George and Merry Christmas!!

Thank you so very much for your guidance, everything worked out well.

The engine is functioning normally as I can change its states, forward, neutral, reverse.   When idling, I have crew talk and pump sounds.   The only thing not working are the lamps atop the engine.  Both ends are not lighting.  I tested the bulbs and they are operating fine.  Even cleaned the contacts inside and the contacts in the cab, but to no avail.  Any thoughts as to why?

Also I had asked about the 10amp fuse set-up using an auto glass fuse.  Will this be sufficient to handle any derailments or shorts in a timely manner?
