I suspect that most of who run contemporary trains have one or more auto carrier cars.  They have been available for some time from each of the major manufacturers.  But, I also suspect that like mine, they all have a problem.  In the real world, you see train loads of auto cars with autos filling them heading to their destinations and running empty only on the way back to the manufacturers.

But on my layout they are always empty and I can see right through them, particularly when they are backlit.

Unfortunately, I know of no source of cars that meet these criteria:

+ really cheap, since I will need dozens and dozens of them

+ light weight since a die cast car will add lots of weight to the car if it is filled

On the first criteria, the only manufacturer that makes really inexpensive cars is Menards, but they are die cast and thus heavy.

What we need is a very simple plastic body casting.  It would have wheels, windows, etc all in the single "shell".  Perhaps three body styles: a sedan, a SUV and a pickup.  And if it were cast in clear plastic, when we paint them, the clear windows would be there.  Even if clear plastic will not work, a neutral color still let's me paint them in different colors, and making the windows "black"

Would anybody else besides me be a customer?

Peter,

I was able to find these cheap plastic cars at our Dollar Zone store here in South Jersey. There are a pack of 3 for $ 1.00.

They are about 3" (12 scale feet) long . The body styles look old enough to be from almost any era 1940's on up. You can also get a 6 pack for $ 2.00.

They reminded me of the cars that came with the old Lionel Auto Carriers.

I had often thought about inexpensive or 'filler' vehicles for our trains. Had the idea of injection-molded shell of generic vehicles, but with highly detailed relief features like model kits, and snap in wheel/axels.

I remember YEARS ago, P&G made a laundry detergent called BIZ that had a promo of Ford vehicles made by Funmate that were attached to the detergent. Cars came with a launcher, were plastic and detailed, and looked to be O scale. Those could make great filler cars, as I have seen them go for around $5 at time on the bay.

Rolland, your suggestion solved the problem!

Going online, there are. dozens of cutout paper vehicles to choose from.  I downloaded ten different styles so far, resized them to a rough O scale and will print them, cut them out, glue them together and fill my auto cars, all for the price of ink toner and semi gloss paper!  My car dealers will be so happy, I can now deliver their new inventory.
