You should retake the pictures so they are in focus. It would be a big help in identifying the shell.
I compared your pictures to my Lionel #1666 and they match up with one notable exception; the slot for the e-unit lever is forward of the sand dome on my example. My engine is an early one and it is possible that the later ones have the e-unit at the opposite end of the motor.

The insert for a metal number-board below the cab window is telling me that this is a 224/224e shell.
ill try to get better pics later...uhmm i have a later 1666 i believe and the eunit slot is in the same position as yours..i looked up a 224 online and it looks really close..and actually to be a really nice engine...wonder if i can get all the parts to make it decent...not to worried about the cost or time...
It's a 1939-1940-1941 229 2-4-2. It's the only loco to use that particular boiler casting.
looks like it could end up being a nice engine...anything unique about it...does the 229 have its own motor or does it share with any other engine...
The motor is a 229M-1.
Or...depending on which screw holes were used for the trailing truck plate, a 1664.
Yes, the 1664 early used that shell too, 1664E-19 motor.
