Need Help Identifying Set

If you have the Greenberg's guide, look up the stuff under Postwar Trains, look up each item by number, they are all there. Don't go to sets, as you must have the set number and so far I didn't see a set number in your post.

Looking in the Lionel Promotional Outfits (Lion Roars Pub), I found the 245X in two sets;X-570 and X-571. Neither set has the cars that you listed.

pennsyfan is on the right track. Lionel dealers occasionally combined locomotives and cars and track to offer their own sets. This set seems to be one of them. A set that came from Lionel in Irvington/Hillside would have its own box.

It seems that the set in question is X-855 offered in 1959.  The Lionel Scout in the set,with Magne-Traction,was offered for 1 year only,1959.  Set X-855 had the Scout,#245 and 1130T tender,6465 double domed Sunoco tanker,6014boxcar,6162 gon with canisters,and a 6017 caboose.

Not being an expert on Post War Lionel I can only give my opinion that this set was in a catalog and was available.  There are two very interesting web sites that give basic information on Lionel Post War.

John, that is a nice set you found. At a guess, I would wager it might have come from the S&H Green Stamp catalog, as did my 1960 224 Alco set. Western Auto and Miller's Auto Supply stores were other possibilities. Enjoy your new find, I like the missle car! 

I have owned a number of 6844 missile cars. I haven't seen one with arch bar trucks. You may have a real odd ball piece there.

The variations that come to mind are:

Black car

Red car

Side gussets extend below the sides of the flat car (black car)

grey missile rack (red or black car)

olive missile rack (black car)

There may also be variations on the holes though the flatcar deck and in the mold number. I didn't keep track.
