Floquil Grimy Black is actually a medium gray paint. I just airbrushed some on an HO loco last night, and was amazed at how gray it is. I'd suggest using that, either by itself or added to the UP Harbor Mist.
to match this take the UP gray, add a drop or two of tuscan, a drop or two of black, and a drop or two of yellow. Mix until it matches. Those are the colors you'll need- it's going to take some time mixing to the exact color but it will work.
Take the engine to Lowes or Home Depot. Ask them to color match the engine shell and give you a SAMPLE batch of paint as latex or oil base.
I use a lot of concrete color so I had them make me a gallon of the color from one of the spray examples.
Weaver scale coat makes a harbor mist in a can or bottle, and Tamiya makes a gunship grey that looks like Harbor mist grey. Maybe one of them might help.

Useing a comercial hobby paint, ie harbor mist grey, will only work if the model manufacture uses the same color on their models, and if the paint manufacture makes the color the corect shade on every batch.
Unless you want to spend time doing the alchemy that Jeff suggested, sometimes you jut gotta go with what's close.
This locomotive came with a black fuel tank. I used Accuflex UP harbor mist gray. Not an exact match with the manufacturer's color, but a lot closer than black. I didn't feel like horsing around for an exact match.
For some odd reason, it seems to match the trucks better. It looks less obvious at a distance.

I have this problem with my Williams units. I start with Floquil HM Gray, add 20 drops of black and 20 drops of Floquil Armour Yellow to a 1 oz. bottle. It comes out close enough not to be noticed. The MTH HM Gray is close to the Williams Gray, so this formula may work or may need to be tweaked slightly. I would suggest matching the colors in direct sunlight because it is difficult to get the colors close in artificial lighting.

Id took my PRR S1 Duplex to my loco dupont automotive paint store..the computer matched that brunswick green to the T!!!..I can spot brush touch it and you cant tell...Id never cared about the floquil paints..never matches wright..All my stuff is painted with automotive paints=takes a better beatting and last longer..Lionals trains and other model trains manufactor use automotives paints/enamels and lacquers paints..plus I paint cars for aliving..so I use that to my advantage..
Can your local Dupont store put that paint into spray cans too? I had that done in the past.I agree auto paint is ideal if you can get it. It was THE paint to use for slot cars.
