Hi All,

I'm having trouble with the whistle coming from my 2020W tender. The whistle was inconsistent and weak, which is what prompted me to tackle it. I watched Jim Barrett's Backshop video on PostWar tenders and followed it as far as I could as he worked on a different tender model.

The tender is an early tender with the metal air box. I took it apart and cleaned the brushes/springs, polished the armature, and replaced the two wires from the rollers. I could not see any way to separate the motor from the air box to check the air box for dirt or needed lubrication. Upon reassembly I had a consistent sound, but it's more of a "shriek" than the whistle I remember (please listen to the attached video).

Any thoughts you would have to get me "whistling a happy tune" again would be appreciated.

Thanks for your help.

Bob

I have the same tender with exact same issue just oil the as stated and it will be quiet! Do not over oil the brushes bearing, or oil will get in the commutator and really screw it up, I even have polished the commutator face where the brushes ride and will work perfectly! also if the brush springs are weak, I would replace them as well there cheap!

Thank you all for your responses; you were right.

I took the tender apart again and tried oiling as close as I could to where the armature shaft would meet the whistle box. I'm not sure I did much except drop oil where it wasn't going to do any good. Then I turned the unit over and saw a "dimple" on the outside of the whistle box where the end of the fan shaft would be. Why I didn't see that yesterday (or have it register if I did see it) I don't know but after 2 or 3 drops of oil in that dimple I'm in whistle heaven.

Thanks again.

Regards,

Bob
