So a few months ago I bought my first MTH engine at the Allentown train meet and have been happily running it in conventional mode along with my grandfather's 671RR. I have been anxious to use some of the DCS features and today at York I finally purchased the DCS Commander remote. I got home hooked it up... and nothing  I verified that my PS2 was the 3v and figured that I need to reset the address. I was wondering if there was anyone here that would be kind enough to reset my engine with their full featured DCS remote? I'm in Gilbertsville PA (between King of Prussia and Reading). I checked with my local MTH dealer and they said they don't have a 'shop' DCS system to do the reset for me. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Drew

If I understand you Drew you have the new remote commander from MTH that has a little remote and a track side hookup.

Now, as I understand it, you must reset your locomotive to factory settings. Have done this using a regular DCS REMOTE and TIU (the system with a lot more features) and a price to match. Anyway what you need is a FACTORY RESET that will set the locos address to "0" On the DCS remote it is "MENU, ADVANCED, LOCO RESET, FACTORY RESET."

The "manual" reset is done with the whistle and bell buttons on your conventional or MTH transformer. Place engine in neutral at around 8 volts. Then press "horn, bell, bell, bell, bell, bell." you should hear two hear two horn blasts. Shut off power.

Now power up the LOCO with your new DCS commander remote hook-up. This should work. I find that you need to develop kind of a rhythm with the 1 horn and 5 whistles thing. Not real fast or too  slow. About as fast as you clap hands.

Good luck!

Hi Drew,

doc is right with the reset. If you get someone to do the reset with DCS tell them not to start it up again in DCS the remote comander won't work then. After the reset just let it go and the start it up with the remote comander. I just recently ran into this with a customer doing the same thing. I've never been good with the whole throtle movement.

Who out that way did go to? I know Jim Prindle is out that way, but I think someone told me he moved. Prindle use to do the repair work for Ye Old train and Christmas shop. If you can't get smeone out your way to do it let me know and we can try to get together at the store I work at that is listed below. I don't keep normal hours but maybe we can come up with a time I can meet you at the store. My e-mail is in my profile.

Doc,

The "manual" reset is done with the whistle and bell buttons on your conventional or MTH transformer.

The manual reset is not a Factory Reset and will not reset the engine's DCS ID#. Regardless of what you may have read - even in MTH manuals - the transformer reset is a Feature Reset.

This and a whole lot more is all in "The DCS O Gauge Companion 2nd Edition", now available for purchase as an eBook or a printed book from MTH's web store site! Click on the link below to go to MTH's web page for the book!

Thank you for all of the information here. The name Jim Prindle sounds familiar, I think that's who Ye Old train and Christmas shop referred me to for Lionel tinplate repairs but I never got a hold of him. If I recall he has a shop on Rt.100 in Bechtlesville.

Ralph, I think I'll take you up on that offer. I'm about an hour away but my schedule is pretty flexible (meaning I'm available any day during the week). I'll send you an e-mail in a few minutes.

Thank you Doc and Barry for your help as well.
