I was surprised when I removed the trailing A unit of my MTH ProtoOne  PRR Centipede (item number 20-2200-1) that it looked like cardboard in the vents.  upon trying to run the leading A with the trailing A, engine would start up but when you tried to move in forward or reverse, it would trip the circuit breaker.  Once I removed the shell, I found the paper was from the inside and came from a capacitor that had exploded.  The capacitor was on the slave board and the aluminum sell was empty.  It was the aluminum electrolytic capacitor that was about 3/8 inch round and 1 inch long.  Information on the capacitor stated it was rated and 35 volts and had a value of 220 Micro F.

What would have caused the capacitor to explode and if I just replace the capacitor, is it like to blow the new one?  Where is the best place to find a replacement capacitor?    If the unit requires a replacement board, I will probably just take the motors out and make the trailing A a non-powered unit.

Appreciate any help.

Thanks,

Don

Don,

Give that it is a Proto 1 engine, the capacitor is likely from the same period of time when all the computer mother boards were having blown caps.  They were simply made poorly. I'd just solder a new one in its place and run the engine. The new ones generally do not have issues, although the occasional bad apple does pop up. If you still have a Radio Shack in your area, try that. Other wise, you need to go to an electronics supply house like Mouser or Digikey. You can also try asking Gun Runner John on this Forum. He is usually up on these things.

Best of luck!
