Hi all,

I just put my 2004 Lionel TMCC SP Tank Train set on the track for the first time out of the box, and have some odd ball issues I could use some help on.

This is supposed to be a factory Lash Up of two SD40-2s.

I am running them on a Legacy 990 system.

When I put the first of the 2 engines on the track to set up in Legacy, I do the following:

1) Set the first engine to Program via the little switch on the bottom of it.

2) Place on track

3) Power Up Legacy Command Base

4) Turn on Legacy hand held

5) Increase transformer voltage to track

6) Press CTC, I see a flashing 1, press the "Eng" button. enter 31 where the 1 was.

7) Press "Set" and I hear the horn and lights flash

8) Decrease voltage to track to 0

9) Remove Engine, place its switch back to "Run"

10) Place back on track, increase voltage, test run engine.

HOWEVER, when I power down the track, remove this engine, and then place the 2nd engine on the track and perform the above steps, albeit replacing the the number 1 with 32 for teh 2nd engine, when I press the 'Eng" button.....after I test run it, and then lower the voltage and place the 1st engine back on the track, there is no more "31" only "32".

In fact, my NYC S1 which was already programmed into the LEgacy system is also GONE!

No matter what I do the Legacy system will only accept one engine.

I have gone back and forth trying to enter both of these into the legacy system, but cannot, it only accept one engine and removes any others.

Can you all help me?

Thanks

Just throwing out some ideas chipset:

Are you addressing the engine you want to run? I.E press ENG 31 or 32 or whatever?

When you address it, it doesn't come up on the remote?

Did you follow the locomotive owners manual regarding operation as a lashup? There may be some confusion here, When Lionel locos are "lashed up" they each get their own ID, they also get programmed to respond together as a a single "lashup" ID#.

The single ID# allows them to run together and respond accordingly.

IE lights changing direction between units when the locos, front coupler being the front coupler of the lead unit, rear coupler being either front or rear, on the rear unit depending on which way it is facing.

Using the lashup ID makes them respond as a pair, or you can select their individual features via their individual ID for situations when you want to drop one loco, running one independently.

The " forward" orientation of the rear unit usually has to be selected.

They have to be programmed in "TMCC mode" they will not respond in "Legacy mode"

It shouldn't be removing locos. removing a loco requires selection and deletion.

Thanks guys, here are my answers:

Q:Are you addressing the engine you want to run? I.E press ENG 31 or 32 or whatever?

A:In run mode I press engine and no matter how many times I press it, it only switches between the last engine I programmed and 1.

Q: When you address it, it doesn't come up on the remote?

A: In run mode, only the last engine I entered and 1.

Q: Did you follow the locomotive owners manual regarding operation as a lashup? There may be some confusion here, When Lionel locos are "lashed up" they each get their own ID, they also get programmed to respond together as a a single "lashup" ID#. The single ID# allows them to run together and respond accordingly.

A: I did not try a lash up yet because I thought I did something wrong when I set each of them up individually

Q: Put both locomotives on the track, power up the base, power up the remote, power up the track, do both locomotives sit still?  Now press the ENG button on the Cab-2 then press 31 then then the horn button, what happens?

A: Yes each will move, but it seems I was just selecting what number I saw and kept pressing the eng button thinking it would cycle thru each engine number...my bad!

Q:Now press the ENG button then type 32 and again push the horn button, what happens?

A: I am going to try this now, seems I did not realize all I had to do was enter a number...lol, I am trying to use it like a MTH DCS where u just select what you see.

Me the big dummy!

Thanks guys, seems I was trying to cycle thru the engine numbers i entered by pressing the ENG key repeatedly unil I saw the number I wanted.

My apologies, i was using it wrong.

I will run upstairs and do like you all said, i.e. actually enter the number, I bet it works!

Pushing ENG button cycles between the last two locomotives you addressed, a new/ different loco will have to be addressed with the keypad. Then the ENG button will cycle between that loco and the one before.

The ENG button only is basically a shortcut to reduce the need to type in the ID# every time.

Typically, addressing a loco involves ENG and then the ID#
