I have a Lionel N&W C420 (item number 6-28244 that ran fine for a short time but then the sounds went away.  I did the factory reset but no improvement.  I checked the volume control and after turning it five or six times, I heard some of the sounds come back but if I moved the shell, the sound would become intermittent as though there was a short or a bad pot.  I then tried to take the shell off (a really tight fit) and an aluminum metal plate about 1/2 inch wide by  apx 1 1/2 long with a connector on one end at 90 degrees managed to get stuck between the base (catwalk) and the sides of the engine.  After a great deal of working with it, I managed to dislocate the metal plate from what ever was holing it and remove the shell.  In the process, it appears the metal shield around the coil on a board marked "SDK4205" was disturbed.  I then tried to run the engine but it tripped the breaker and I notice the board got that burnt electronics aroma.  I removed the SDK4502 board and the engine ran OK but no sounds.

My questions are:

Does any one have a photo of what the insides of the locomotive should look like as the shell is to be replaced?

Where does the metal plate go?

My guess is I need a new SDK4205 board.  Do you agree and if so, where do I find one?

Am I on the right track or should I be looking for something else?

Appreciate any help.

Thanks,

Don

Don,

If I'm understanding things correctly, you think the RailSounds power supply board is bad. This is the board that has the metal shield box around the toroid coil. I can't be sure if that's truly the loco's problem, but if the loco shorts while that board is installed and is OK when removed, then it's probably a good place to start.

Just a heads-up at that the "SDK4205" is just a manufacturing date code -- SandaKan 2005. The proper part number for this board is 691-PCB1-04D or the newer one is 691-ASPR-A00. Either should be fine in your application. Lionel has these in stock for $40.00 each.

I hope this helps-

I have them in stock so you can get faster and less shipping if needed. E-mail in profile.  Also, remove RS board and reseat.  Pot and where wire connect to Mother board can be part of this sound issue.  Also have seen defective speakers.  SO you just need to work through issues.    G
