I was given a Lionel MPC F3[ex NH] repainted to look like a 1950's Lionel EP5. I have the following issues:

  • A thin green wire is being used as a power pick-up. same wire that goes to and from the e- unit to the dual Pulmor motors. should this wire be replaced with the repro flexible black wire a la postwar diesels?
  • Are the power pick up rollers underneath "melted" into the  plastic insulator? If not are they glued?
  • The front motor wants to turn while the rear motor is not moving. The dual pulmors seem to be running opposite of each other. What could cause this? The reverser is the e-unit.
  • Finally, the shell is tough to install as the rear spring clip gives a LOT of resistance to line up the front screw. Any tips for this issue?
  •  I broke off one of the rear tabs. Can a good repair place replace this rear tab that is riveted to the shell?

Thanks in advance for any assistance in these matters.

I have replaced broken rear mounting clips with new ones secured with 4:40 screws and nuts.  The roller pick up is not glued to the plastic insulator, you may have to pry it out or tap it out from the top with something sharp.  I would use about a 20 gauge wire on the pick up.  The motors turn opposite each other because they are mounted back to back....

Thanks Marty.

To clarify what I meant when the motors turn opposite is that the front motor turns the truck wheels forward while the rear motor is turning the rear truck wheels in reverse. Like they are fighting each other abeit the front truck is slow to respond to power while the rear truck picks up and runs right away.
