Fired up the Proto DDA40X for the first time in a long while and immediately remembered why; the wierd smoke problem.

If the smoke switch is "OFF" the rear smoke unit runs pouring out smoke while the front one remains off; if the smoke switch is "ON" the front smoke unit runs and smokes but the rear one stays off.  I didn't see any pinched wires, so assume something is hooked up backwards on one of them, but I haven't a clue for what I should be looking or changing to make it correct.  Any help/hints greatly appreciated!  Thank you.

It's a Proto locomotive, not Proto2, so there are not any DCS settings to override that I know of; just the switch for On/Off.  Somehow something is crossed or not connected correctly so one works while the other one doesn't, switch "ON/OFF".

What is the product number and what do the instructions say?  I did a search on DDA40X, and only PS 2.0 engines showed up, besides the HO.

It is possible that smoke was wired like couplers where only one at a time would be operated.  Since PS-1 smoke runs off track voltage easy enough to wire both to the same switch as mentioned above, or add a separate second switch to have independent control.  G

MTH called it the "DD40AX" and that's why it doesn't show up on the DDA search.

Resolved!  When I got the shell off I noticed there are actually two smoke unit switches under the truck; one for front unit, one for rear unit.  I had switched one ... then the next time I turned it over, switched the other one!  My duh.

Working fine.

Those smoke units really put out a cloud of white smoke!!
