I’m looking for an on/off relay that will handle 18 volts AC and 15.4 amps operating current, and controlled by 12 volts DC (I think I’m saying that right).  Basically, I need four relays to turn on and off track power that is 18 volts with a maximum continuous of 15.4 amps.  I have several types of transformers, so control voltage can vary from 0 to 18 volts either AC or DC.  I will be using a Lionel Block Power Controller to control the relays.

What relay (with model number) would work for this situation?  Thanks.

The one that comes to mind immediately, cheap, and easy to source, would be an automotive headlight relay. Coil is 12Vdc, contacts will handle up to 40 amps (depending upon the model of relay) easy to mount (one screw through a tab) and terminals are spade lugs that mate with crimp-on connectors.

Here are 5 for $16.00 including wiring harnesses, and free shipping.

Here are 5 for $13.00 and they are 40-amp relays with free shipping.

And here's how to hook them up, in case you aren't familiar with the automotive relay terminal designations:

85 coil   12 Vdc  (from control switch)

86 coil   ground

30 common contact  (from transformer)

87 make contact  (normally open)  (to track)

87a break contact (normally closed)  (not used)
