I visited a friend of my sister’s last night. He’s just getting started and is having some issues with his small FasTrack layout.

 

He and his wife bought a set for their grandson; but then it was decided that Grandpop would have room for a nice layout in his basement. He's done a great job with construction and scenery – but wiring not so much.  

 

He has a double oval layout with crossovers on each side; he followed the directions laid out by folks at the Train Station in Mountain Lakes, N.J. He’s got insulated track pieces in the middle of each crossover and two 80w transformers, one for each oval.

 

The problem: each transformer seems to power the entire layout. Last night we were running one train over the entire layout with one xfrmr. The other one didn’t do anything (even though it was on and the green light wasn’t blinking). Today he said tinkered with the connection wires from the non-working transformer and it started working briefly. But now both transformers are blinking.

 

I’m trying to help but I’m not proficient in either FasTrack or new transformers. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I don’t want him to get discouraged.

Hi. From the blinking, it sounds as though you may have either a dead short somewhere in your wiring, or your transformers are not in phase. If they are out of phase, just swap the positions of the wires on the back of one transformer.

 

As for the whole layout being powered when you have isolating track sections. Did you remove the wires underneath the isolating sections? 

 

Otherwise, it may something unusual in the layout wiring. It's rather difficult to tell without seeing a wiring diagram. In theory, all that you should need is for the wires from one transformer to go to one loop, and those from the other to go to the other loop.

 

My best guess would be that the wires are still in place under the isolating sections. 

 

I hope that this is of some help.

Are the insulated pieces the small ones that are only 1 3/8 inch long?

If so, there is a wire underneath that needs to be removed before the two loops can be electrically isolated from each other.

Also, make sure the transformers are in phase. I'm sure they are, otherwise you would have already discovered a much bigger problem.

Thanks for the help. My friend called the Train Station folks and they also identified the problem as those connecting wires in the insulated sections. Not being familiar with FasTrack, I didn't know how those sections actually worked.

 

He's pumped now that we've identified the problem, so he's moving on to some other challenges, like a trolley line, and some accessories.

That's where to start, galley proof, check the insulated track piece.

Here's the manual for the 5" block section. Method is the same if he has the 1 3/8" block section that they used to offer or don't show in the product photos 6-12073 or 6-12074

Next, what do you mean by crossovers? A fixed piece or switches?

 

Finally, the wiring should have a buss around the entire layout. All commons or "U" connections to the same wire. Then, two "A" wires, one for each transformer.

Optionally, two wires, one for each accessory terminal. (probably needed to power the switches, if they exist. Better than track power.)

 

For simplicity and testing after configuring the isolated track section properly,(disconnecting the center wire jumper) he could connect each transformer to a terminal track on the loop it is intended to power.
