I am looking for some ideas on a two track main line bridge for a lift out area. The distance is 38.5 inches long.

I already have the double track Atlas bridge in another location on the layout so I want to do something different.

The New Lionel lift out bridges are not out yet, they are single track and not long enough... even though they look great.

I will post some pics of the environment, the lift out currently spans a door way.

The only requirement that I see is I would like to be able to pull it off the lift out area in one piece... Any ideas?

Dear Sir,

I made a lift bridge for a friends O-Scale layout recently.. I built two towers that went to essentially the ceiling.. then put a deck for the bridge with rails, then I installed a button to either bring the deck up and would automatically stop at the top and then push the button and the bridge would lower always exactly into place.. Something like this..

I wanted scenery under my bridge so I built a tray under it.  I have not finished it yet.  Susan's Run Room has good ideas.  The gas shock makes it super easy and light to lift and retract.  Someone also posted these hinges on another thread.

I apologize for posting late in this topic. This new procedure may help newcomers, or an individual wanting to change their present lift up bridge. There are some excellent lift up bridge projects in this topic. Have you ever considered a horizontal swing out track layout section. Will not require any heavy lifting when using a large track layout section. A swing out track layout section has no height scenery restrictions and some depth scenery restrictions. Even though these supplied examples are in HO scale, the same procedures can be also applied in O scale. A back drop scene can be also permanently mounted, to continue and join together a present back drop scene. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sGg9e7h3qnM (Swing gate 1 - Aisle gate operation | Model railroad bench work | Model Railroad Hobbyist | MRH) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QuUHcL8KgWQ (Swing gate 2 - Aisle gate cam operation | Model railroad bench work | Model Railroad Hobbyist | MRH) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MwABuBcnwzM (HO Scale Union Pacific 12X20 Layout Progress #1: Bench work & Swing Bridge Access Section)
When using a swing out track layout section, clearances will be required on the out swing end of track layout section. Some individuals use a straight cut angle, while others choose to use a radius cut. A straight cut angle will be much easier to cut and allow for much easier fine adjustments when assembling the unit. (A) Do not use raw cut lumber for a swing out track layout section, because this type of lumber can or will twist in time. I recommend using finish cut lumber. (B) Do not use black (dry wall) flat headed screws, for a swing out track layout section, because they have very weak screw heads. I recommend using silver flat headed wood screws. (C) Do not use hinges that are loose, for a swing out track layout section, because the track alignment will be different each time. I recommend using one long piano hinge, or two high quality hinges. (D) Do not allow the swing out track layout section, hang out freely for long periods of time, because in time the weight will cause unit to slowly drop. I recommend that the swing out track layout section always be in the closed position, with a location support under it.
Why not add a special safeguard electrical system to that the lift up bridge or swing out track layout section? To insure a safe free passage through this layout movable track section. It only takes one simple mistake like leaving the lift up bridge track (up), or the swing track layout section (out), to allow the locomotive/locomotives and rolling stock, to crash down to the floor. There are different types of procedures, including using advanced electronic circuit board sensors. http://model-railroad-hobbyist...0Bridge%20-%20Wiring(1).jpg This is a DCC safety wiring connection. Even though this is an example of a DCC two rail system, it can be easily changed to any three rail track system. From the permanent mounted hinged side, it will require two flexible track feeder wires. These two wires are permanently mounted to the lift up bridge or swing out bridge, directly to the main track power. A micro switch is used to insure that the lift up bridge or swing out track layout section is correctly positioned. The one problem with this type of wiring, is connecting the two required wires the opposite side, safe section. Required to run two wires over (or under) this open aisle section. Why not totally replace these two required wires connections, with a different procedure? Why not add two flexible electrical track contacts from the lift up bridge or swing out track layout section track power, directly to the opposite side, safe section?
