My family will be heading to Newark NJ. and need to know the best train to ride from there into NYC. I know the Chicago rail systems, but am unaware of the trains in that area, other than the fact that they do exist. Our goal is to at least see Times Square and the Statue Of Liberty. Let's assume, Times Square first for returning to Newark later that day as well.

Thanks!

If you travel in New York City (Manhattan) take a subway ride to Coney Island. Take the Q train from 34th St. and 6th Av. The Path Train from Newark, NJ is in the same station complex just follow the signage. The Q train goes over the Manhattan Bridge to Brooklyn. After 3 stations in the tunnel it emerges into a open cut. After 5 more stations it then climbs up on an embankment to above the street level. After 7 more stations it switches to an elevated line over the street first on a single deck and then a two deck upper level until it reaches Stillwell Av., Coney Island. Have lunch across the street at Nathan's Finest and maybe take in an amusement ride(s). On the way back to Manhattan take the D train that goes many stations on an elevated line above the street for many stations before going into an embankment and then the tunnel. The D train will take you back to 34th St. and 6th Av. where you can get back to the Path Train to Newark.
