A friend has asked me the value of a set and I'm hoping anyone can give a ballpark figure.  I haven't seen it so I don't know the condition. According to my friend it's in very good condition.  They have no way of testing the engine.  Here's what it contains:  402 engine, 418 Pullman, 419 Parlor, and 490 Observation.  She didn't mention if there was any track or anything else.  Any help will be appreciated.  Thanks!

I have the Greenberg's price guide and can give you some prices.

The 402 is between $365 to $570, lower price for good, higher price for excelent.

The 418 is between $225 to $320.

The 419 is between $205 to $280.

The 490 is between $190 to $255.

Lower prices total $985, higher prices $1425.

Track may not give you much if original because of conditions like rust or bent track.

You must remember that these prices are not the realistic selling prices, as that may differ by $20 to $50 per item, depending on how much the buyer wants the item.

Don't sell to a train dealer or antigue person as they will talk you down to less then half price for an item. Go to a train show or auction site(if an auction site you can post a minimum or reserve price and not sell below that), I prefer to go to train shows to sell.

Thanks everyone!  My interest is mainly American Flyer and I had no clues to help her except to ask the experts.  She is interested in selling it.  Yes, it may do well at a show but that idea is out unless I have a friend (who usually has a table) sell it for her at the next Amherst Rwy Society show in W. Springfield, MA at the end of January.  I recommended ebay as the best alternative.  I could help her with that unless someone here is interested.  Meanwhile I'm going to send her the link for this page so she can get some ideas.

Keep commenting if anyone has other thoughts.

That's what I like about this forum.  Many are always willing to help. Thanks again and I wish you all a Happy and Healthy New Year!

To make a truly realistic estimate of value, someone would need to inspect and test the set and document with good photos. Sometimes a set that has been laying in a box for a long time may look good on top and be rusted underneath. Book values often give folks an overly optimistic idea of actual market value.

That set is probably my next aquisition.  I just cannot find a suitable one as to condition(no touchups or alterations).  Thanks, Ron Blume, Forest Hill, Md.

Okay Ron, I haven't heard from her yet but I did send her this thread link and told her to keep watching it.  "The ball is in her court."

I highly doubt if it was repainted.  This was kept in the family who were not in the hobby at all.  Like all old engines, they can usually be restored if needed unless something drastic happened to them or were stored in a damp area.  Hopefully they have a transformer to test it.  Her husband likes trains; maybe he can test it.  I may have mentioned that I have not seen the set.  I'll try to get more info.  We're Facebook friends who went through school together way-back and it could be awhile before she responds to this or my messages.

I purchased this set about a year ago including a 431 diner for $700, it is mojave, runs like new, condition c7. I am sure they can be found cheaper but I bought this one because all the colors matched as they had been a set and kept together since new, same patina.

Color will make all the difference.  there area a ton of Mojave (tan) sets out there right now.  Unless pristine and boxed with all paper.. figure 7-800.

Apple green 408 is a bit of different animal. More desirable and regularly $1200 and up.

The 402E set in mojave is fairly common, Outfit 403E, I believe. Look at previous ebay and Liveauctioneers results and go from there.

Rarity and condition are kings with original prewar. One or the other can sway the price tremendously. This is a common piece, so condition will greatly affect the value. The nicer the condition, the more money it will bring. If in C-6 condition, and at this time of depressed values, look under $1,000. Probably more between $600-$800.

All that being said, it is a lot of train for the money. I had one, and it is an impressive, large train.

Rob, tell me more about the apple green version. The only ones I have ever heard about were mojave. I have no idea of what variations there are of the 402 engine.

Jsrfo, I modified the post, thanks for the heads up... Stupid me was not clear and typing faster than my little rat brain was working... I was actually referring to the 408 set....

Though there are a couple 402 floating around in non-Mojave livery, these are paint samples and do not count... for this discussion.
