greeting! it's been a long long time since i posted. so getting to it about a year a go i picked up a lionel 75th anniversary set that's never been run the box is opened but the contents are still sealed, i did buy it to run however, but couldn't bring myself to break the seal, well now i've decided the time has come. but i'm thinking i should take extra care in firing the U-boat up for the first time, like oil, and grease the gears. any advice would be helpful.

thanks Dave.

Oil, grease yes.  Watch the traction tires, they may disintegrate if they have hardened with age.  I always check the wire solder joints on these era trains also.

Depending on how the engine was oriented during storage, check the motor brushes to make sure they didn't get oil on them. Old hard oil on the brushes will cause problems.  More of a problem on steam designs vs. diesel.
