With my new home in the works, I've got a new man-cave/bonus room for myself upstairs, and I can easily fit a table based 13x8 with full walk-around room. Attached is my first attempt at it. I've got a boat-load of K Line super snap, so that is initially what I've started with. The main loops and the yard are all O-72 curves (so I can run most anything), with a small independent loop of O-31 in the middle for my RTR stuff that can run in small spaces.

The buildings right now are just speculative, as I don't have many yet, and those two Hellgate bridges are just for fun, though if I go with, I will get them, or maybe get BridgeBoss to make a 5 footer. The Lionel bridges in the middle loop area I do have already, and was just putting them in to see if I can use them. The offshoots from the mainline are just mini-industry or possible expansion later if I want to start running around the room, which I'm also entertaining as a possibility. The yard is very simple, and will likely store Locos there.

Right now I'm all conventional operation, but will be doing Legacy as soon as they actually start delivering some.

This is also my first big run with RR-Track 5.1, that I purchased a couple of weeks ago. It's been a lot of fun too!

I just wanted to post it here and get some thoughts from the more experienced folks on this fine forum, and see if I'm heading in a good direction. I'm more of a "runner" than "operator" so three loops for me is a good start.

Gotta start somewhere.

Thanks all

Phil in Austin

Phil,

I like your plan as I am a runner myself.  Have you thought about any terrain features, mountains or tunnels for example?  As a suggestion you could place your inner 031 loop and the town buildings on a plateau, perhaps extending it over the outer loop track in the upper left to create tunnels.  This might allow for additional track off your main loops to create a reverse - might lose one of your bridges and part of your lake however.

Best of luck.

Steve

Thank you all for your remarks. It's my first attempt at any sort of permanent layout, and it's a learning experience for sure. I have thought about raising the inner loop up and over the outers to create the tunnels, and that does sound like a great way to go.would make things more interesting for the space too.

I never thought 13x8 would be "small." But I've looked and worked with all the scales, and I find O the most appealing by far. The tech geek in me finds Z very appealing, but I wouldn't won't to work with it every day. So O it is.

I'm also likely going to fill in the empty space in back, and just deal with having to stretch a bit to the center area. Right now I'm just trying to lock down an era of time, and the general location/geography I find appealing, and then put it all together. I'll work on it some more and repost later this weekend perhaps.

Thanks again.
