Hey everyone! 

 

Here is a new locomotive that I picked up yesterday from my local hobby shop The Station in New Cumberland, PA. 

 

It is a Lionel Legacy Western Maryland GP7 that I purchased for $370 (after tax). The model is gorgeous and a beautiful runner! The slow speed control is fantastic and arguably the best I have ever seen on any locomotive! The sounds as always are top notch and are one of the reasons I keep buying Lionel. What's neat is that on "roll speed" aka speed step 1 the engine emits fantastic sounds like the flanges on the wheels hitting the rails, etc. Very realistic!

 

Ironically, I think the smoke unit in the locomotive has quit already after only 3 hours of running with smoke fluid while making videos, BUT considering that I paid only $370 bucks for it and that I'm not big on using smoke or seeing white smoke coming out of diesel engines I'm okay with it! 

 

It runs great all around!  Now if Lionel could just fix those crappy smoke units!  Grade: B+

If you still hear the fan running chances are it needs more fluid. Legacy smoke units are extremely thirsty and these dual outlets make for a long way for the fluid to get down into the unit.

 

I'm not sure how many times you added fluid in 3 hours, but I've found that 15 or so drops is usually only good for 5 or MAYBE 10 minutes at most, thats probably a stretch though.

 

Its also a good idea to gently blow down one of the stacks after adding fluid, I usually hold one finger over the opposite stack at the same time.

Thanks for backing me up on smoke coming from diesels! 

 

I could have made the lemons (aka the smoke unit stopping) ruin the purchase, but smoke units in my book are not the end factor for a purchase and are inherently faulty thus, with Lionel, at least I expect them to fail.

I'm a big fan of the Legacy GP7's. Have/had a few.

 

 

Sharp is an excellent choice of words! I saw this on sale at my LHS for 320 (before tax) and considering today's prices for just a GP9, a new GP7 today couldn't be any better so I bit! 

 

The yellow winged striping in the front is the eye catcher for me! 

Really nice Mike. Great paint scheme and the Legacy slow speed and sound package is tough to beat.

We have the UP 107 and it gets plenty of run time. 

If you ever do decide to replace the smoke unit, I would suggest, whenever refilling, to remove the roof cap and the internal plastic funnel so you can inject the fluid directly into the smoke unit batting.

The funnel supplying the twin stacks just doesn't seem to let the fluid get to the actual batting very well. It ususally seeps everywhere.

Thank you for the suggestion! Unfortunately though, Lionel only made one "hatch" removable. Thus on my locomotive at least you have to take the entire body off to get at most of the inside parts.

 

I know for sure its the fan since the element still wisps out smoke slowly but surely. For now I have the smoke switch turned off for the same reasons I stated above. White smoke coming out of a diesel is NOT GOOD or prototypical!
