It's Happening !!!   Legacy Station charged my CC Saturday, and it shipped today for Wednesday arrival.   It's my New Vision Big Boy 4014 and I'm nervous as ****, as the last 3 Lionel engines I bought (1 vision, 2 legacy) all had big  issues.   Hoping this one will finally be OK.  Fingers Crossed !!!  Please please don't let me down Lionel.   Wishing all of you that will be receiving yours this week and next the best of luck.

Good Luck!  I saw on a Facebook post that someone got their Big Boy and the manual referenced wheelslip, but he did not have a Legacy system to test it.  Let us know if that’s true or just a fake post on Facebook!

The last legacy run of them had it. 2031700 https://www.lionelsupport.com/...1250LegacyBigBoy.pdf

Wheel Slip features
To create the effect of a locomotive losing traction, your Legacy Steam Locomotive has a simulated slip feature which simultaneously produces smoke, sound, and motion. During wheel slip, the stack smokes as chuffing sounds rapidly increase, then decrease in speed and labor. This feature can be triggered when the locomotive motion starts.

Wheel slip can be triggered in two ways:
Trigger the wheel slip effect using the Boost key:
1. On a CAB1 remote press the H button, or on a CAB2 remote press the M or H buttons.
2. With the locomotive stopped, apply the boost key.
3. Adjust the throttle to maintain motion, as releasing the boost key stops the locomotive.
OR
Trigger the wheel slip effect using the Train Brake & Throttle (CAB2 only):
1. With the locomotive stopped or in motion, fully apply the train brake.
2. Turn or confirm the throttle position so the target speed is greater than zero.
3. Release the Train Brake slider by moving it upwards.

So, should be able to do with even just the older CAB1.

Thats cool, did not know it was released before.  Thanks!

Is yours the excursion 4014? I'm curious if Lionel actually glossed the entire loco/tender or just the locomotive like last time.

From the YouTube videos I've seen that have come out the last few days it appears that the paint is the same on the locomotive and the tender. It does not look glossy to me. Not like the Premier Big Boy from the lastest release anyway. Maybe I wasn't looking at the excursion version.

Perhaps someday Lionel and MTH will retool their lower chassis assemblies, so end users can optionally exchange out the wheelsets with rubber tires for steel.   (It's very possible--all MTH HO scale steam locos had this design feature.)  Then we would get to see ACTUAL wheelslip complete with attendant smoke and sound effects.  With the right spare parts, I think it's possible to exchange axles on Lionel's Legacy Consolidations and Moguls; also the Niagara.  On anything else it would require skilled machine work.

I've suggested before that the Legacy "train brake" could apply a physical brake to the tender, caboose, or a specially-equipped freight car.  The added physical resistance would be enough to induce wheelspin in the loco, assuming (1) that it was geared low enough; (2) that it wasn't overweight for the chosen motor/gearing combo; and (3) that it wasn't equipped with rubber tires.

The "brake" itself could be magnetic, or simply an expanding pantograph type mechanism controlled by a solenoid, that rubs on the inside faces of the car wheels.  Since the CAB-2 (and presumably the app) have a slider, it would be nice if the brake force was variable and not just on/off.

I hope I live long enough to see this come to pass, but I'm not holding my breath!

If it's the Legacy Station video that is the coal fired one. Hoping to see the oil fired.

The unboxing video I watched there was a piece of black foam in the front. When he removed it the bell fell off. He tried to casually put the bell back on and it fell off again. He never did comment on it but it was obvious something was broken. There was zero shipping damage to the box so it appeared it was not any sort of shipping damage.

I've been lucky in most of my purchases so far but unless things change I will not be ordering anymore expensive trains. Like some others I do not have the luxury of having a local train hobby shop in my immediate area.

For the folks that say you are in the wrong hobby if you are not prepared to deal with these situations don't even make sense to me. I have plenty of money to spend but not for incompetent quality control.

The boxes are built to withstand a direct hit from a Harpoon missile.. missing the bell and the foam that would have prevented the boiler door from opening then getting torn off by gravity is just plain bad QC.. I got a Greenbrier end of Aug and it had to go back for turned out bad board.. then this .. I expect when I buy a new anything it’s perfect .. This BB was going to be the last Engine for me and I didn’t expect it till the end of year .. I have a Berkshire on order but now I’m not sure I wanna roll the dice on it ..I also expect that wherever I buy this stuff from to do all the legwork to get it all taken care of for me

I did it!   I finally received a big engine from Lionel that isn't broken.  Thank you Lionel.  It was well packed and double boxed, actually, triple boxed if you count the extra box Legacy Station put it in.  Thanks to LS for that extra effort.  This model is actually quite beautiful and detailed.  I don't have a legacy system yet, but I ran it conventional and with the Orange bluetooth remote and everything seemed to work.  I had to expand the tunnels a bit and cut off a little of the mountain wall where it passes very close by.   Worth it to finally have "The Beast."  Sorry for crumby pics, but you know what it looks like.

I’m not sure which is worse, …..the fact that you anticipated something was gonna be wrong, or the fact it sounds like this is the first new engine you got that didn’t have something wrong!….glad y’all boys are not having issues!!

Pat

Might have spoken too soon.  So the engine has probably 10 minutes of run time.  Now it has a high pitched whirling sound in forward that adjusts it speed with the speed of the engine.  Do not hear it in reverse.   Any thoughts?   I took an 18 second video on my iPhone where you can hear it but I cannot seem to get it to post.   Thoughts?   Really Really hoping this isn't anything serious, engine seems to be working fine.

So, yes, I was able to turn volume completely off with the orange remote.  (new info, didn't know I could do that). Turned it all the way off, but still hear the high pitched squeal.  Sound like rubbing styrofoam or two nylon gears not meshing well... thoughts?  Again, if anyone can post the vids for me, you could hear it well.
