Hi all!

I got a new camera for Christmas and finally got around to testing it out on the Christmas layout. I am new to photography (go easy on me!) and am trying to get used to all of the features and capabilities. I welcome any tips from the good photographers on the forum!

Enjoy!

What camera?  Just curious.

For someone who is new to photography you did very well.

Suggest you get a tripod if you haven't already.  The auto white-balance on modern cameras seems to work quite well and you probably can adjust it in the software that came with the camera, so - lose the flash, use available light,  aperture preferred setting stopped down (larger number=smaller aperture for depth of field), and self-timer.

Here is my personal favorite of the train photos I've made:

Evening Departure

I wanted a shot that was pure toy train but from a realistic perspective.

Thanks for all of the great and supportive responses! I value very highly the expertise of all of the forum members. Also, thanks for the tips on the photography. I have a tripod on the way! Should be here in a week. Can't wait! The camera is a Canon Rebel EOS T5.

Scottydl, the bridge is the Hellgate Bridge (6-32999)

Paul, the mountains are stacked pink foam with plaster castings cemented to the sides with joint compound. I will see if I have any pictures of the construction phase of the layout. The outer edge is plaster rock castings, again with the joint compound.

Thanks to whomever (the moderators?) moved the post to the correct forum.

Alan,

Mine came with several different packages that I am finding somewhat daunting at the moment. Slowly, I am beginning to understand some of the basics. I am willing to put in the time, but time is what it will take! The pictures that I took were just on the TOTALLY automated setting. That is to say - I managed to press one button

Thanks for the response.

Excellent.  A great camera!  You're all set.  Suggest you stick with the more basic options and ease on into it.  The newer cameras can do so much it's easy to get confused, at least for me it is.

ps - The full auto setting is an excellent starting point, as we can see from your photos.
