Have noticed within this last year in Cedar Rapids and other areas, Canadian National has be upgrading crossings.  Streets with crossbucks are generally getting flashers.  Major roadways with flashers are upgraded to gates plus the city is adding center dividers so drivers can't drive around gates.

Wondering if other RR are starting to do this (albeit expensive) upgrades?  In one respect with gates (and conjecture on my part here), if a driver does get through and scratches up his car and hit with train, the damaged gates would have incriminating car paint evidence, driver (if s/he survived) can't whine "I didn't see the signals".

here in the cleveland, ohio area, CSX and NS have converted several crossings into quiet zones,no horn at the crossing. some have quad gates, others have the concrete curb in the centerline of the road about 150' on each side of the track. at the crossing gates themselves there is usually a small sign"no train horn".

i suspect the train crews dis like the quiet crossings. Jim

san diego upgrading crossings

"As part of a statewide $2 billion Trade Corridors Improvement program, the California Transportation Commission in 2012 granted $25.9 million toward a $40.5 million total being invested in the San Diego area on upgrades to track, signals, and grade separations. The goal is to double rail freight capacity through the San Diego/San Ysidro/Tijuana border crossing, while eliminating as many as 31,800 truck trips annually."
