Note the high headlight! When can I get one in O gauge?? Wow, very cool. 4700 horse-power, Caterpillar engine.

LOS ANGELES – The Metrolink board of directors approved the purchase of up to 20 new EMD passenger locomotives last Friday. The southern California commuter agency received bids from a number of companies interested in constructing the new locomotive, eventually choosing EMDs design due to a number of factors, such as overall cost savings and preferable contract terms. |
"EMD last built 20-cylinder passenger locomotives in 1967 and 1968 when the FP45 and SDP45 were produced for a handful of railroads."
WOW! Now that's a modern locomotive.
A little too modern for my layout, but quite interesting all the same. Beautiful loco.
YES! Count me in; gorgeous; 21st-Century-Henry Dreyfuss-like (ah...in subtle grey and silver...).
I'll take 'em.
Perhaps Amtrak should buy some to supplement/replace the aging Genesis fleet.

Reminds me of the Intercity 125. Loooks like a copy rather than someting unique and groundbreaking. Maybe the end product will be slightly different than the intercity 125
prrhorseshowcurve,
Thanks for the pics of the InterCity. I think the Acela looks even more like the Intercity 125 than does the F125. And an E unit would be just a copy of an F unit with minor changes, following that logic. All later GPs are just copies of earlier GPs since the look is simlar and the development evolutionary rather than revolutionary.
The InterCity125 has a top speed of 125, but only 2250 bhp (wikepedia), so the prime mover is quite a bit different. There may be other technical differences to be revealed later.
In any case, its still an interesting development and a cool look, even it it shares roots with the InterCity 125 and other earlier locomotives. It will be good to see what the final production unit looks like, there may be changes from the "artists rendering" that could make it look more or less like the InterCity, Acela, or some other loco.

The InterCity125 trains are bi-directional and normally operate with a power car at each end of the train.

To power the HST at up to 125 mph (201 km/h), each power car had a new diesel engine, the 12-cylinder Paxman Valenta, running at 1,500 rpm and developing 2,250 bhp (1,680 kW). The 70-tonne weight of the power car gave it a 17.5-tonne axle loading.
Hmm, very interesting! Looks like something out of "Knight Rider".

Not as futuristic (or retro?) looking as the Progress Rail version:

Both have the high-headlight.

Do you think that perhaps 'Iron Man' may have been the inspiration for this locomotive?
Good Day,
I like the EMD F125 version.
