I picked up some of the new GGD 54' express reefers.  I also have the brass version that 3rd Rail/Sunset did a few years back.

I'm currious about a few things and am wondering if anyone has knowledge about these cars.

1st - As I remember the brass version had rivited sides, but they should have been welded sides (which was corrected in the new plastic version).  Is this correct?

2nd - It looks like there is a mistake in the new cars involving the step ladder under the door.  On the model it is centered, but in pictures and on the brass version, the ladder is offset and is mounted at the leading edge of the door.  Is this incorrect, or was the ladder mounted either way on the prototype?  The ladder was centered.  (See Ed Rappe comments.)

3rd - The only other thing that catches my eye is that the trucks look a wee bit too small.  The trucks on the brass version look a bit larger.  The new car also seems to ride too high on the truck which I assume have been done to accomodate 3 railers.  This also adds to the truck looking too small.  The 3rd Rail/Sunset trucks are larger but I don't know which are correct.  I could be the GGD trucks.

Not having any references for the car, all in all it seems to be nicely done except for the issues noted above.

GGD seems to have done an excellent job on the car (I deffer to Ed Rappe.)

Overall opinion a nice model....

I concur with that. I'm very happy with mine. Express reefers are some of my favorite cars, so I am looking to have them as well modeled as possible.

I guess the Santa Fe version is not entirely correct but the paint certainly matches this scheme.

check out Railway Prototype Cyclopedia Volumes 7 and 9 for coverage of express referator cars.  Vol 9 has photos of 2 classes of ATSF/REA express refrigerator cars.  4000-4049 are steel sheathed rebuilds of wood cars.  4050-4099 are 1953 built all steel 52' cars similar to the GGD model - but not exact..The GGD model was based on the 500 cars REA took delivery in1947-8.  The door steps are centered on the welded 1947-8 REA cars, but offset left on the riveted 1955 built cars.  GGD got it right on the latest car - the Sunset 3rd Rail car has body errors.  PSC and USH modeled the 1955 welded REA prototype.

Ed - Thank you very much. That is excellent info, exactly what I wanted.

Your comments are GREATLY appreciated.  I find sometimes I have to go out on a limb and make some uninformed comments in order to get someone to correct me.  It's worth it, but embarrassing.  Again, thank you very much.

I'm glad GGD got it right, and hope to pick up some of the correctly painted cars.

I will revise my earlier comments.

(I just picked up Vol. 9!)
