Hi everybody.   This is my first forum and I'm not real sure what I'm doing.   I'm just getting started in model railroading.  I have an old Lionel Birkshire and a modern CSX 4845.   No track set up yet.   I have purchased 4 issue of oguagerr magazine so far.   Any input would be great.   I live near New Castle Pa.  Looking forwards to getting to know everyone.

When I first got back (from childhood trains) into O gauge this site was extremely valuable!  I explored the track/layout planning forum to get ideas.... the scenery and structures to see what I liked..... and loved getting inspiration from the Weekend Pictures thread that appears in this catagory each week on Friday (sometimes early on holiday weekends).

And when a problem or questions does arise, look around for the answer here!  Someone is sure to have already had and solved any trouble you may encounter.

Hey, Rick!

You sure came to the right place. Whether learning about railroading in general, creating your own model layout, wiring, controls, scenery, structures, lighting, decorating & weathering, photography & video, where to buy stuff, and help with anything you can think of, this is your one-stop for everything.

I started in O-Gauge eight years ago, and although I have a lot more to learn, what I have already learned here has allowed me to thoroughly enjoy the hobby. And the best part: you will not find a nicer group of guys anywhere else.

Welcome aboard!

Alex

If I were to characterize this forum with just two words, they would be friendly and variety.

The friendliness and variety evident among the pages of OGR magazine are reflected among the pages of this forum.

That is, you will, likely, quickly discover a variety of personalities, variety in the ways of contributing replies, varied approaches to our hobby, ways of enjoying the trains themselves, huge and delightful differences in executing a layout, and many different skills, all wrapped up in a friendly atmosphere, which is likely why this forum lists so many participants.

Enjoy the adventure. It's a nice place to play.

FrankM.

P.S. You stated New Castle, PA, in western PA. Have you ever been to Kennywood Park ? You can have a similarly energizing ride here.

If you look at the thread, here, "Pricing Lionel Trains," begun a day ago, you will see, IMO, a classic example of this whole forum. A strong desire to be helpful is palpable; there is some side-drift to a related topic, but the drift is harmless and adds information, pertinent to the poster's original inquiry. Cordiality and politeness are evident; camaraderie, and a good amount of level-headed, experienced advice and knowledge are replete.

Rick,

Sorry I missed your New Guy topic first go round!  As I said on your more recent topic, Welcome!

It is always good to have someone new join, no matter where he or she is from, but it is special for someone local.  You will get to know lots of great folks both far and near!

Do you go to any train shows in the area.  I run into a number of Forum members at Greenbergs and TCA shows.  I see you are like me, putting your photo on your profile.  Friends from the Forum will walk up to me at shows and say hello since they see my mug every time I post something.

I feel welcome already!   Thanks guys!

Happy to have you.  Just don't mention the UP Steam Program or PRR K-4s 1361 and you'll be relatively safe

I mentioned them once and I have the scars to prove it.
