"HONGZ" stands for HO scale, N scale, G scale, and Z scale.

Post your non-O scale stuff here!

Hi guys, New guy checking in here... I'm Adam, but before I give you the full speech lets get the bad part of me out of the way quick. I'm an N scaler and most of my focus is there BUT traditional O gauge has always been in my model railroading life. While browsing ebay I saw one of those wonderful traditional Lionel auto racks that I love and remembered my childhood dream of collecting a massive train of them. I picked it up and hope I can find some more in the future, the current vision is two traditional Lionel GP38's, one in NS horse head paint and the other in the NS Eco scheme (the one from the starter set) and as many autoracks as I can get my hands on, but for now the one will do. In my N scale expenditures I've been collecting unit trains that I don't have the space to run (started with genius me picking up 32 roadrailers when I have a 4x8 layout and a couple of modules) so I'll be joining a club and the one I've selected has a focus of Traditional O with a few other scales present so I figured it might be a great opportunity to bust out the older O scale trains (and my future autorack train) and get some run time on them in addition to getting the N stuff moving. O scale trackage wise I've got a 10'x12' loop of O-27 around the top of my room that hasn't been touched in a decade (actually  now that I think about it I chucked a K-line MP-15DC up there a few years ago, been sitting since). I've got three or four large bins stuffed with O-27, I'm going to need a bigger radius of the O-27 styled track for the auto racks I know... that is if Lionel even makes the stuff anymore.

Now for the basic guide to me as a person:

I'm a Floridian, to be more specific I live on the space coast.

I am OBSESSED with the Nasa railroad.

I am considerably cheap, when I buy something I have a number in my head and wait (sometimes years) to get it for that price.

I'm a semi-skilled modeler but like everybody else I'm still learning. Here's a sample of my work, a custom painted and decaled N scale walthers Difco https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/...152_bd6938e03e_b.jpg

I'm a perfectionist when it comes to my modeling, I refuse to call a job done until it looks exactly how I want but with that I complete my projects VERY slowly and occasionally farm out some work to other modelers just to get the project done.

I'm a CAD designer and LOVE 3D printing, great for N but I've got a feeling It'll be a BIT more expensive in O.

I know my stuff when It comes to N and prototype info but with O I'm going to need just a bit of help, counting on you guys for that one

I know NOTHING about electrical stuffs other than the basics and a bit about how electrons behave, I've tried to teach myself but it just doesn't click, If I ever ask an electrical question talk to me like I'm from mars and don't know what a light bulb is.

Well... That's me

I hope I find the OGR forums to be a place I can further grow and find some friends who share my passion of the Nasa railroad, traditional O and of course horrifically out of scale Lionel autoracks

Thanks and have a good one

You mean like these?

These videos are really old (9 years), and at the time, I didn't know the editing software that came with my DV camcorder was designed to make Video CD's (half of standard def resolution). I think I may be closer to 37-40 cars now. One day I'll re-shoot this train with a HD camcorder to show the train as it now exists.

Welcome aboard, Adam!

You are in luck when it come to the traditional sized Lionel autoracks - they made a lot of different ones over the years, and they aren't that expensive to collect, judging by prices seen on eBay and at shows.

And, in case you weren't aware, you can find NASA stuff in O, too.  MTH Trains has done a lot of NASA stuff over the years (enough to keep you busy hunting them for a good while ), and the gone-but-not-forgotten K-Line made some NASA stuff too (click here and search NASA in the search box in the upper right of the page).  Lionel has done some space-themed stuff over the years, but I'm not sure if any of it was actually decorated as NASA.

Happy hunting!

Andy

Yep, I saw your videos when youtube was in its infancy and 240 was great resolution, they're what made me go from wanting one to wanting a whole train of them

Lionel made one for the tcaa, NLAX 191 based off one of their tank cars. The mth stuff has some real winners like the solid rocket booster cars but they tend to stray away from prototype with other stuff. I'm planning on adding an mth booster car to the collection as a novelty but typically I model the NASA stuff in N (my goal is to match the ENTIRE Nasa Railroad roster as of 2010, they rostered 32 helium cars at that time, and unless I wanted to go brass or 3d printing it'd be impossible in O.)

Adam,

Welcome to the OGR, the best forum on the Net.  Glad you like the NASA RR, I have a large NASA O Gauge Train myself.  As Andy advises the old K-Line NASA cars are great stuff, good luck with acquiring more NASA cars.  Post some more pictures of your layout when you can, would love to see your NASA train.

Here's my Flickr

all my photos are there and I fanatically update it

some NASA railroad highlights:

NASA switcher (Modeled after an sw1500 but at the time it was run SW1500 tooling didnt exist in N) and WIP Titan SRB flat, the Air Force version of the shuttle cars (both actually existed)

My current Shuttle SRB train, 3D printed clearance gauge and flatcar cover

My N layout... its embarrassing, I made it when I was 10 after all the years It's still up and going... mainly use it for testing. I am proud of the modules for the most part, you'll see both in my photo stream

"I forgot how big O was"

I hope you don't forget and try to pop one in your mouth Sheldon

A hard core scale N fan, with a soft spot for off scale O cars filled with S scale cars?

Yep, you've found a home

And teachers to learn from, and students to teach, no body knows everything

Now if we can con you into a tin train too.....? The sky isn't the limit obviously lol.

Thanks for joining in.
