In the early 40s, the New Haven released a publicity film titled "A Great Railroad at Work." Included are scenes of some its premier equipment of the time such as the I-5 Hudson and "American Flyer" cars. The scenes of railroaders from a variety of crafts at work are fascinating.

The narrator brought back memories of when I was a kid watching "Lowell Thomas Remembers" on Channel 13 with my dad.

Two words: Labor Intensive. Railroading back then utilized a lot of physical work. Note the guy clearing car seats, or the men using sledgehammers on the drivewheel tire. ...And dangerous. Note several views of men atop freight cars.
