I’m awaiting delivery of a motorized Budd car plus 2 non motorized passenger Budd cars, NIB from 1977.

What is the sensible thing to do prior to powering up the motorized unit for the first time ever?  I plan to remove the shell, oil where indicated, lightly lube the gears, and oil the wheels on each of the 3 cars.
I will also inspect all wiring for any cracking, and replace as needed.

Does anything need to be done with the brushes, etc?

I will also change the light bulbs to led bulbs.

Any other suggestions are most appreciated.

Checking the gear grease on the drive unit is important.   I just did that on a Williams BL2 diesel shelf queen and the grease was so hard the wheels wouldn't turn.

Make sure the brushes are clean and aren't stuck, from oil that may have run when they  were sitting in various positions and temperatures on the shelf.

Lightly buff the wheels and pickups on the powered unit.   To assure good contact.

Also check the wheel bushings on this model and make sure they can't fall out of the frame. I had one of this design do that. It jammed between the wheel and the frame.   The bushings were often a slip fit not a press fit into the truck frames.  I use a toothpick tip amount of epoxy glue to secure the bushing to the truck frame if needed.  Don't let it get on the axle.
