I just retired on February 1st and was interested in turning my annual Christmas layout into a permanent one. We relocated from the San Francisco area to near Annapolis to escape the high costs of living and to be nearer family late in 2017.  With the move came more room and I now plan on using some of that for a train layout.  I just discovered this forum and joined it last week.  Also just started working with RR Track, using the last FasTrack Christmas layout as practice.  I'm not sure I've mastered the Terrain functions yet.   I had discussed the potential with Ken at Engine House Hobbies and he introduced me to GarGraves and Ross Custom Switches track.  I've used that for my layout in RR Track.  Interested in any comments or recommendations.  Thanks.

Brad,

Please note that there are several software products on the market for track planning.  As a result, many of your readers will not be able to access the files (rrt) that you have posted.

I would highly recommend that you try to save all iterations of you plans in both rrt format and as jpg (picture files) format so that more may participate in the critique.  I have looked at the one picture you posted, and my first question is:  Is the rest of that room out-of bounds?

Admittedly, RRT's png image leaves a lot to be desired, especially with all the grade numbers, so here's a closer view of just the 12'x30' layout along with a 3D view to give some perspective to elevations. Suffice it to say the yard is on the base level while both cities are elevated. I appreciate having the RRT files included so the design can be studied in more detail using RRT. That said, I think it's a nice plan and I don't see anything I'd change.

Since you are new here I will share a OGR forum link to my running post on how I built my layout, a portable Christmas one for years.  In the last several years I have added permanent space for a layout and installed the original layout permanently .  It is a O27 toy style layout and may not be your cup of tea but may be of interest.  I use lots of scratch building techniques including an operating $10 homemade turntable.
