I think this is the right page to post this to, if not I apologize in advance. So my current layout is about 11' x 24' and basically takes up one side of my basement. The other half of the room is about 24'x24'. The last few months I have been thinking of all kinds of track plans, something that incorporates Pennsylvania and New England into one. I came up with a drawing of what I had in mind (Still undecided on switches and sidings). I have a good amount of stuff now and o scale has been my main scale forever. The real problem I am stuck on is whether I want to switch to ho scale . If I decided to switch I wouldn't get rid of all my O scale stuff, I hate the thought of getting rid of any. A few reasons for my thoughts are its generally cheaper, not everything but most. Since its smaller, theres more room to work with to incorporate more of what I like. I always wanted a turntable/roundhouse but they are really expensive and they take up a lot of room in o scale if you have a decent size roundhouse. I also want to try to get into kits and kit bashing. I haven't done many but theres more kits available and since its cheaper, I won't feel as bad if I screw up on something. I know more about O scale than any other scale and I have been in it as long as I can remember. This has been bugging me more than it probably should but I just feel I need to have some input. I like trains of all scales, there isn't any I dislike, but Im just thinking maybe it fits more of what I want out of the hobby right now, but I could be wrong too. I don't want this to be a "scale" war because they are all trains and everyone likes trains .

bmccarron.. first of all you made the pitfall mistake we all do... thinking too hard.  With the size room you have available, and with an existing layout, logic would dictate using what you have and expanding on that.  Nor do I have anything against HO, I also have some... in boxes.  They were inherited and given to me by friends.  I do plan to make use of the HO track with some On3 Rio Grand Southern in the layout mountains.  Yes, we all like trains, and some of the best looking layouts are in HO scale.  I also use some HO kits on my O gauge/scale hirail layout, where they fit and look good.  But, I would not, myself, go the extra expense and time for another scale and make the most of what I already have.

bmccarrom,

Boy O' Boy, texastrain hit it right on the head,"You made the pitfall mistake we all do...thinking too hard". I would consider thinking about what you're wanting to do for at least another six months. I myself feel that without doing so you would be making a extremely costly mistake. What you're wanting to do will cost about twice the amount you think it will. They experience is a good teacher. Whomever said that was wrong, very wrong.

These are all valid points, and it does seem like a lot of time and money to switch over and make ho my primary scale. Like I said I would still keep a good portion of my O scale if i did switch over. I know I'm not the first person to think of this because it seems like a lot of people in the hobby have made a switch from one scale to another, some even switching back. I might take Stoshu's idea and make a small table for HO to see how I like it.
