Hi guys,

Hope you all are doing well.

Longtime lurker, first time poster...etc

I am starting to plan my new layout and I modified this tack plan to better fit my space:

https://www.trains.com/ctt/how...ight-s-gauge-layout/

Right now the plan  is 66" by 12' total space I have to work with is 66" x 14'6". If I keep it this size, I  have space to move the layout and can get to all sides.  I would appreciate some input and was wondering if there are better options to use my space?  I would like to have room for three industries (I currently own: korber pickle factory, grain elevator, and Clever Models City Ice and beverage) I would also like room for a city scene over the track (where the track goes into the tunnel now).

I like the ability to be able to run an engine that requires 054, but all of my current engines/rolling stock require no more than 036. I would like to stick with MTH track because I have a lot of the parts already and can recycle some from my first layout. I would consider fastrack also as an option.

Thanks in advance for any help!!

A few thoughts-

Looks like you prefer loop running. That's fine but this layout will get boring fast. Think about what you want and will hold your interest over the long term before settling on a plan.

1- add a 2 pairs of switches, or a double crossover, to connect the two loops

2- for the up and over figure 8- Widen the loop to match the profile of the outer (after figuring space needed for item # 1). Move the switch leading to the 8 back as far as possible to the right. Let the inner main loop stay flat on the board and elevate the lead off the switch to get to the top for the figure 8. The down slope should also be as long as possible and then connect to the inner loop where appropriate. Toy train grades don't work well with newer equipment (don't ask me how I know......)

2A- eliminate the grade all together and use crossover track sections for the figure 8.

3- Try and fit either a passing siding or a couple stub sidings for some storage. Other than serving the industries, you have no place to park anything except what's currently in use.

4- I don't get what all the tunnel portals are for. Is the left half hidden and the right in the open? (*edit- went to the link in your post- makes sense now but I'm still not sure you want to hide that much track on a small layout)

There's a great book by one of the guys on the forum with lot's of great plans for small to mid-size spaces.

Welcome and thanks for posting. Lot's of great advice to be had here.

I agree with RSJB18, you will get bored with just running loops.  I would also install a crossover between the two loops and add your industries in the space in the center.  This provides a reason to move to the inside loop.  I use Fastack and love it, of course, I don't like to ballast track so it was an easy decision for me.  Just my 2 cents worth.
