I stopped at Nicholas Smith Trains yesterday and saw a few of the new Lionel GP30’s
PRR - PC - Conrail ( patch jobs ) - looked really nice

Steps and frames seem to be perfectly aligned - last run had some misalignment issues

If anyone can post some pics of the Santa Fe I’d appreciate it

Thanks

Where is your GP30 coming from?

Across the Universe

So it is going to be quite some time before it gets here. You'll probably have pics from other sources before mine gets to me.  However, I expect it to be quite similar (except the paint scheme) to the freight bonnet GP30 from about a decade ago or so.

The new dress blue GP30 joins  freight bonnet from about a decade ago in multiple units. The mu's are part of a consist of tank cars.

The yellow is a bit brighter and the blue a bit richer than the bonnet but they look good together. There are a couple of small spots where box rub wore through the yellow and a little bit of blue can be seen.

Glad to learn that you guys seem to like Lionel's new Legacy GP 30s. Just by comparison, I bought a new Lionel Legacy GP30 exactly 12 years ago. It retailed for $499, but I got it from Trainworld for $461. Out of curiosity, I compared the features list of both engines (Lionel 6-28385 to the new Lionel 2433151) and the features are identical with the exception of the new one having Bluetooth, Voice Control, and the IR transmitter for sensor track.

I would never use any of these new features and my 12 year old SF GP30 continues to run very well with no problems and most parts for it still available. I just thought it interesting to compare a couple of the same Lionel engines 12 years apart and now a hundred dollars more ($599) for those three new features. Not a terrible price increase I guess, for over a 12 year period. Could've been worse, so enjoy your new engines. 😉

True, the feature set are identical.  The sounds (more like sound balance) are a bit different.  However, if that freight bonnet was made today it would probably have a strobe as when then GP30's were rebuilt with the bonnet paint job they were equipped with strobes.

Fwiw, it's appears, on the new one. Lionel fixed the rear steps that were out of alignment on the 2011 release.

Wow, Rick! You're right and that's a good thing. Thanks for pointing it out.

I remember the misalignment of the rear pilot of the GP30 production run 12 years ago. I emailed Lionel about it and sent high resolution photos. I received an email back saying that the photos were too small for them to see the problem. Not really believing them (obviously they knew as they redesigned the pilot), I took matters into my own hand. I "fixed" mine a long time ago https://ogrforum.com/...gp-30-rear-pilot-fix.

@WBC: It was good of you to inform Lionel of that blatant design/manufacturing error back then and it’s too bad they didn’t act on it until 12 years later. Nice work on your fix.
