I'm sure that in time Lionel will strive to add some BASE3 Exclusive features to new products to push people into buying it.  Right now, I don't see anything significant that it would add to my operations.  Given the poor performance and range of the current generation of BlueTooth products, I avoid that mode of operation and strictly use TMCC/Legacy.

It looks like a lot of people are buying the Base-3 and many of them already have TMCC or Legacy.  So, most people seem to be aware of advantages of upgrading.

No doubt the Base-3 will be a big hit for Lionel.

Still leading the cheer I see.  So tell me, what are those burning advantages of the BASE3 over the Legacy system most of us currently have?

Absolutely leading the Lionel cheer! There is a lot of good stuff going on with Lionel. Don’t you want Lionel to do well? Don’t you sell Lionel in your store?? Why does it bother you that somebody wants Lionel to do well and enjoy their trains? And since a lot of people are buying the Base-3, the question you should be asking is: “What is it that they know that I don’t know?”  😉

And you have sales figures that back this up? Or just a rah-rah cheerleader without an actual clue? As far as I know, base 3 isn't even shipping yet, so who's buying? What advantages of upgrading, you seem to be vague on that, other than the currently ridiculous prices of the no longer produced legacy systems.

Lots of people have ordered the Base-3. Why does that bother you?? Don’t you want Lionel and the hobby to be successful?

Another person who wants to see the hobby fail. Lots of people have ordered the Base-3. Why does that bother you?? Don’t you want Lionel and the hobby to be successful?

How the heck do you equate wanting YOU to be truthful with wanting to see the hobby fail? Who are these "lots of people"? Where are you getting these numbers other than pulling them out of thin air? Do you own a hobby shop? If so, how many base 3 preorders have you taken? If not, stop lying to us.

Lionel is doing well, the Base-3 is a big seller and this is good for the hobby.

Exactly what I asked, and your answer is not very illuminating.  So please, tell me exactly what the burning benefits of the BASE3 over my current Legacy system.  Why dodge the question since you seem to be the authority on the BASE3 and all it's wonders?  If there's a gulf in my knowledge, by all means, fill it.

I don’t know…. Lots people seem to be very happy with Lionel. The last catalog orders are strong, lots great locomotives and sets and the Base-3 is going to be a winner and a big seller for Lionel.  Why wouldn’t this make you happy?

Wow, a total non-answer, why did I expect anything more?

Where did I say I was unhappy with Lionel?  I spend thousands of dollars a years with Lionel.  We are SPECIFICALLY talking about the BASE3 and what it brings to the party, let's review the topic of the thread.

New Lionel Base3 transition thoughts for my layout

The sad thing is, you're pushing so hard on this, yet you can't even give me one reason that I should discard my perfectly working Legacy system and buy the BASE3.  Can you stop the cheer-leading for one post and tell me why you think I should buy a BASE3 and retire my Legacy system?  If I've missed some major benefit of the change, please let me know!

I think we all have the best interest of this hobby in mind. I wish so badly I could make everyone happy, but that's an impossible goal. But we still strive to do our best and bring the latest tech to market.

GRJ and others, I don't think you need any convincing whatsoever to push you into getting a Base3. If it's something you decide you want to do in years to come, then that'll be your decision. The Base2 is still a bulletproof command system and will continue to operate our new Legacy and LC2.0 engines as it always has.

I will say that the preorders for the Base3 ended up far surpassing our forecast and has left us trying to find additional parts to build to the demand. The world of electronic components is rough these days! We're still aiming to have the Base3 ship late this year, but worse-case scenario, early next year.

At the end of the day, I truly appreciate everyone's enthusiasm for the hobby and the Lionel products we take pride in. It's a promising future in my humble opinion.

I heard closer to the end of the year.

Most sites list the 3rd quarter... a couple, list December.  I've noticed recently that a lot of suppliers (vendors generally, not just trains) have been giving shipping dates of two, three or four weeks out... however, I have been receiving items in less than a week.  It's the "Hey, l(.)(.)k at me... I delivered 'early'" syndrome!

Dave, I'm sure at some point I'll likely buy the BASE3, I just don't see the need to be the first kid on the block with one.  I'll use that money for a nice Legacy diesel.

Four digit addresses John... how long can you hold out?

Probably a long time.  It's hard for me to fit more than 100 locomotives on my tracks at the same time.  Also, it's likely that they'll be throwing dirt in my face long before I buy 100 new Legacy locomotives that could actually benefit from the four digit addresses.

I don't argue that's a good idea, it's a shame it wasn't part of the equation from the start of Legacy.

Well there you go gunrunnerjohn, right from Lionel. Base-3 sales have far exceeded Lionel’s expectations. Lionel is doing well and the hobby is doing well.  I was correct in my original statement.

With just a bit of effort, I’m  sure Henning’s Train’s Base-3 sales will exceed Henning’s expectations as well. The Base-3 is a great product so it should be easy to do so. More Base-3 sales should lead to more Legacy locomotive sales. I’m not a business guy, but if you run a retail shop, talking up a product that you sell would seem to be smart business. 😉

I am an individual whom came back into the hobby 3-4 years ago.   Left the hobby prior to TMCC, DCS amongst many others things.   I had a lot of learning to do.  I got the Legacy system and DCS system in the first year.  I never purchased a remote for DCS and always have only used the app.   Then I mostly only use the Legacy remote vs Lionel app when running my Lionel trains.  I laugh at myself as I think what will I do with out my Legacy remote when I never used one anyhow with DCS.   I find myself having an argument with myself.   So assume I will be OK with the new Base 3 system when I accept change for myself.

The one thing I do think of is that I use an ipad to run MTH and then on another track will be running Lionel via remote.   So basically I have to separate devices to run trains.   So how easy will it be for me to move between apps on one device (e.g. ipad).   Will I need to have another device?   I usually set a top speed for my MTH engines as I have on occasion a run away or sudden increase in speed.   But can react quickly as the app is open to control that engine if in the event I forgot to put that max speed setting in place.     So I am sure I will figure this out as I know I can swipe between work, travel, other apps but will I be able to do this easily or fast enough when running both DCS and Lionel on one device.    Maybe this has been discussed or is in another forum.

In my view, sure sales are will be strong, there is nothing else available from Lionel.  New enthusiast like myself, have no real choice but to buy the Base 3 or pay over inflated used prices on a Base2/Cab2.

I would suspect dealers are also buying more stock of them given the current supply chain challenges.

So in other words, not only do we have strong Lionel but also confident dealers who are stocking up on a product they believe will make them money. That’s good news for the hobby and the Base-3 is part of that success story.

Happy to hear that Lionel hit a home run on the base 3 from what Mackawando said and confirmed by Dave Olsen. I was very leary of a system that runs with an app on your phone/tablet but seems to have strong sales. So… Lionel did their planning and homework with the base 3 and invested in tooling and components.

But, the legacy system is nice and works well but I still like my ole trusty cab-1 from about 25 years as it runs everything tossed at it in command or in conventional with a bullet-proof TPC.
Just my added 2.5 cents! Lol!

Thanks Ted!! I’m still using my 25 year old CAB-1 until the Base-3 arrives. It’s amazing to see a twenty-five year old Lionel remote still chugging along. Lionel’s built them well.

@gunrunnerjohn

I agree with you John. I am all in with Lionel. I have no MTH engines. I have WAY TOO many Legacy engines and about 5 or 6 or Atlas O (TMCC). So of course I want Lionel to be (remain) successful. BUT I do not see any immediate advantage for me to unplug my Base 2 and plug in a Base 3.

I would love to be able to address Accessories, Trains, Engines with 3 digits but I will NEVER be able to do so with any of my current equipment. As I understand it there will be 1 engine that is able to be addressed with 3 digits for the foreseeable future.

The question remains, On day one of ownership, what will the Base 3 do that my Base 2 and LCS wifi module don't already do?
