Hi,
I just purchased a new Lionel 990 set, as a back-up. I haven't needed to upgrade my original since V5.1. This new system is V5.12. I installed the rechargeable batteries had it's been in the charging base for 2 hours. Slow blinking red lights only. Has not charged at all. Is this normal? I know it's V5.12 by installing standard AA batteries to check. Suggestions please.
Thank you,
Joe

I know you probably checked but just in case make sure the charging switch on base is not set to off.

it is, thanks.
Are you using the batteries that came with it? Those are cheap batteries and they may have been sitting in a box for a long time. I bought energizer rechargeable batteries and they work great. I use the recharger that are with them and don’t use the base to charge.
Actually, they are the original batteries. I tried a couple of times but it looks like its recharging. Didn't want to reply until fully confirmed. I have no idea what Legacy version is the most recent released in the sets. The version that I purchased today is v1.52. The last time I upgraded my original was to version v1.5 or v1.51. I have seen a youtube video for v1.61/1.60.
For now it looks like my Cab2 is charging. I am curious which is the latest version Lionel has released in their sets.
The current version of the Legacy system software is 1.60 for the base and 1.61 for the remote.
Thanks. I figured that since there is reference to that on the internet. Is that version only accessible through a download or are the latest Legacy 990 sets available with it?

The new units I have seen in my LHS, The Imperial Train Company, have come with 1.60 for both Base and Cab2 but they were from about a year ago. We've upgraded the CAB2s to 1.61 but they still have the 1.6 module in the box.
I suspect it depends on when the new one was manufactured and if the vendor upgraded them to keep them current.
Thanks Marty!
The 990 charging circuit is the weak link in Legacy. I try not to use it as the base gets way to hot for my liking.
That's an interesting point. My original unit charged fine the first week or so then stopped charging. Now to think of it, could have been the batteries. As suggested, I placed electrical tape over the charging contact and set the base not to charge and use rechargeable AA's that I charge in a dedicated universal charger, or sometimes just standard AA's.
I think that's what I'll do with the new system.
When I recharge my Legacy, using original batteries, the two red lights blink every couple seconds indicating voltage exceeds 5. Is this normal? never done this before. Every couple seconds, I have to lift
remote out , while re-charging. Should I call Lionel, send it in? Does it need repair? it works great while running my trains. Thoughts?
