just wanted to introduce myself, life time train fan, grew up in Lancaster Pennsylvania and spent may days in Strasburg... I'm active duty air force, serving now in Oklahoma City, just settled in my house here and started collection Lionel's, my first set was handed down from me from my Grandfather a Prewar 1668, whistle tender, tank car, babe Ruth car, and caboose... all have the original box's'. then my wife got me 1976 Amtrak shore line limited set, brand new in the box, never unwrapped! Ive been gradually picking up the late 80's 16000 series PRR cars as i see them. my favorite by far is the Penn Central GG1... just reminds me of home, and going to Lancaster train station with my grandmother in the early 90's watching the E60's and AEM-7's..... just wish i was old enough to see a GG1 actually run....

this was when i took it out of the box, we didn't have out house yet, i set it up on the floor of our room in temporary lodging on Tinker AFB

although i didnt have room for a big layout in my house, I'm currently working on a ceiling layout around our office...

i'm sure he had good taste, never met him though, he died in 79 from colon cancer, but i got his first train set, and his first rifle, a springfield model 15 single shot .22.

unfortinitly, he played pretty hard with the 1668... there is a chip of medal missing from the cab, and of the pick ups is missing... last time i put it on the track it just sparked and shorted out the transformer.... somehow he managed to take care of the box's though...
Hi Andrew!

I have a set of slide shoes I can send to you for your 1668. You need both slide-pickup shoes for better electrical conductivity & should reduce the sparking action as well. The Drive wheels may need to be cleaned too as this will help to reduce the sparking you see while the 1668 is trying to run. A dremel polishing wheel is effective for cleaning wheels. Hope this helps. Take Care.

I'd appreciate it! this is the situation i have here...

might be missing more then just the shoe. havent seen the bottom of another one.

Hi Andrew!

Just PM me your snail mail address & I'll send out the Pick up shoes for your 1668. Too bad the edge of the cab has a chip though, otherwise, your 1668 looks good. I have one of these in gunmetal grey that I had restored about thirteen years ago. The original color was black & I bought it as a teen 29 years ago in 1982. It runs like a clock too. Take Care.

Mail has been sent! thank you much!
Hey Andrew,
Firstly, thank you for your service to our country!! I thank God for y'all daily.
Secondly, welcome to our forum. There is vast knowledge available here (just for the simple posting of a question).
Thirdly, among your passions is the GG1. If you have any questions concerning anything about GG1s, I highly recommend you contact forum member Jonathan Peiffer. He is the present TCA Desert Division President, and he is a wealth of information on prototypes and models (in my estimation). I recommend joining TCA to anyone.
My best wishes to you, sir,
Steve Painter

So you're a flight engineer; you guys are becoming more and more of a rare breed in the military with the further advents in aviation and computer/electronics technology. That specialty is all but gone in the civilian sector.

From a former Navy Airedale, thank you for your active service.

yeah john.... i'm a dieing breed.... with the advancments in HUD's/ glass cocpits, our job is all but replaced. take the C-17 for example, any problem is displayed on the display on the panel.

one of my flight cheifs recommended a movie to me, the 1955 Jimmy Steward classic "Stratigic Air Command".... the flight engineer on "bud hollands" B-36 was no other then Harry Morgan (that would be Col Pottor from MASH)... sp i'm watching this and his "checklist" are almost word for word as my checklist.... just goes to show how my job is dated..

yeah unfortinitly in the civilian sector its all but gone... there are a few cargo companys that still fly 707's that i could fly on.... but by the time i'm done in the air force i expect that they'll all be replaced.

Welcome from MacDill. I just retired from the army after 25 yrs. After 7 deployments my wife said no to me going to Korea for a year, so I dropped my retirement paperwork. This is a great site with a lot of information. You will not be disappointed.
