Surprised no one said anything yet on this new announcement. I personally think it will be the best selling engine of the year

It might sell well but, to me, it looks like two locomotives. I love the first two thirds and the last one third (camo), but NOT together. The design and colors clash. The overall effect to me is chaotic.

To me it is a great looking engine, nice paint scheme. Can't satisfy everybody.
The paint does nothing for me. It would have been nice if they did one locomotive for each branch of the service. I would have gone for an all NAVY version.
The appeal of this sort of "commemorative" thing is lost on me (this includes "Daylight" articulateds) . I looked out of curiosity. This one is particularly unattractive. "Chaotic", Mr. Scrapiron said.
But - they aren't building it for me, and that's just fine.
I was introduced to this locomotive though a video I saw on YouTube. I really don’t like it, but like D500 said above, it isn’t for meeting.
I believe the draw will be for UP modelers. Even if they don’t like it, it may be bought because it is based on a real UP engine. And others will buy it because it is unique.

Does nothing for me, either. I agree with those who call it a "chaotic" paint scheme. It looks like it was designed by 4 different people who never talked to each other.

I agree whole-heartedly. MTH won't be able to make enough of them. Love the design! There've also been some nice write-ups and downloads of the real prototype.
I just recv'd the MTH email yesterday, but I'm definitely planning to pre-order one ASAP.. Can't wait to see what the accompanying rolling stock will look like too, although I already have plenty of military-class rolling stock which will look super behind this jewel.
Ken, the announcement mentioned 3 versions, one being the Premier line locomotive. Do you know yet if MTH will offer a -1 hi-rail wheels and a -2 scale-wheels option? I'd love to order a -2 model if it's available.
David
Yes they will have a 2 scale wheel option available! The number will be 22-20953-2. Unfortunately we dont carry 2 rail because we get more wrong (I order it by mistake orders) than what its worth.

Excellent news, Ken. But I can see where it can cause problems for you when customers order the wrong model.
I run 3-rail, but my new layout will have ScaleTrax with decent radii curves. And I love the way diesels look with a fixed pilot. Rich Battista's latest video highlights this whole concept of MTH "3/2" capabilities for the 3RS crowd. So that may generate renewed interest in MTH's -2 locomotive offerings -- especially the diesels.
I'm thinking all my new MTH diesel locomotive purchases will likely be the -2 models.
David
I still like my Amtrak Veterans Genesis better.

Definitely in for the complete set. A friend e-mailed me about it this AM.
And I'm 99% Lionel, except my G scale.
So here I go onto the dark SIDE. LOL
Larry
Must have for me
They said Lionel will also be making it so I will wait for that one.
The pictures of this engine don’t do it justice! Look it up on YouTube and it’s a lot better in real life. I ordered one from trainworld last night. Absolutely love it!

If the Norfolk Southern Heritage series along with the more recent Veterans and First Responder locomotives are any indication, you'll be paying a premium for the Lionel models. But everybody gets to spend their money as they see fit.
I've noticed dealers are still trying to move the Lionel models at more reasonable prices than when they first came out, but to no avail. Perhaps enthusiasts who really wanted those locomotives have made their purchases, so what now remains in dealer inventory will be a tough sale. The MTH models, selling for $75-$100 less, are nowhere to be found.
A basic Lionel Legacy diesel lists for $649 MSRP, and the dealer sweet-spot when announced tends to be in the $550-$575 range. That's significantly higher than Trainworld's MTH Premier price of $470 and the MTH Railking model (which is quite good in its own right) at close to $100 less than that. Either way you look at it, we shouldn't be too surprised to see dealers sitting on extra Lionel units in inventory at that kind of price discrepancy.
Granted this isn't really my cup of tea but NICE job on MTH for announcing it NOW while the buzz is still high regarding this engine vs. waiting until the April catalog rolls around. Striking while the iron is hot!
Very cool, thanks for posting.
I didnt hear Lionel making one? Did I miss this? They haven't said anything to the dealers.

Ken,
On the "Hey Lionel , 2018 Wish List" thread, I asked Lionel to get this engine fast tracked into production. On 10/23, Ryan Kunkle responded that this engine is indeed in their next catalog along with some other suprises.
Nick
Very interesting. Good catch Nick. I missed that one!
