Need some help from anyone who has tried a P3/2 steam upgrade.  I received a couple of kits from MTH and used one to upgrade a Premier Nickel Plate Berk.  I have probably done 20 of these using the P2 upgrade and never had a problem.  I use a 6 volt relay in the boiler, controlled by the headlight circuit, to activate the constant voltage board to turn on/off all lights.  The new P3/2 headlight circuit will not activate the relay.  I tried both P3/2 boards from the kits I received and no difference.  Substituted a P2 board in, and the relay works fine.  I gave this info to MTH and they are looking into it, but wondered if anyone might have some thoughts.

It might have something to do with Rule 17 lighting for PS3, where the headlight is dimmed (lower voltage) when the engine isn't moving forward.

 

Try activating the relay with the engine moving forward, when the light bulb circuit has full voltage. If that works, you may be able to resolve the issue with a lower voltage relay.

Because it is a PS-32 upgrade and you only get one control wire over.  The question is can any of the outputs drive it.

 

I have to go check on the next PS-32 repair I do, but I can't remember the headlight having rule 17, but I am not sure.

 

I know the firmware on the boards came with the diesel matrix, and you had to load the new steam file, otherwise headlights were directional.   G

Marty, I think what is nice and why some want it done, is that if a unit is parked powered it won't have lights lite unless addressed and turned on.

 

If it is a simple engine with just headlights and markers, I will connect the markers with the headlight so they don't come on until started.

 

The higher end Premier with cab light, number boards and fire box require the CV board.  Or you have to see if you can fit the PS-2 board in the engine.  Which I have done for premier upgrades.   G

If that is what someone wants, that is OK.  If I want to park and engine without lights, I hit shutdown.  I have never had that request doing upgrades.   I have done a few.   People can have what makes them happy and enjoy.

 

I would use a lower value relay to make what he wants work.  I hope Brian keeps us posted on the outcome.  BTW, the voltage output is 6V  to the headlight on the 3/2 board.

This is a premier Nickel Plate Berk.  The engine CV board runs a headlight, Mars light, markers, firebox glow and cab interior.  Shutting down the engine without the relay would leave all lights on the CV board on except the headlight, unless you park it on an unpowered track.  Thought about putting the PS 32 boards in the engine, little bit to tight.  Will run a couple of tests tomorrow, will let you know what happens.

Okay, got to play with the Berk today.  The headlight, either in neutral or moving would not activate the relay.  Tried different light outputs off the P32 stacker board (interior, ditch. number boards) fed into the relay, no difference.  Tried the same outputs from a PS2 board and relay worked every time.

 

Mth R&D advised me to try:

 

1.  Find a relay that is more sensitive (i.e. will pull the contacts shut with less current)
2.  Find a relay with a lower coil voltage, say, <6VDC

They advised the PWM duty cycle is slightly different from the PS2 board.

 

Looks like gunnerjohns last option might be the way to go.  Will keep you advised of anything new.

No rule 17 on PS-32 with a 3V sound file loaded.   G
