I had a thought in regards to sound. Some legacy engines have great sound while others are a little lacking on volume. I wonder if there is a way to incorporate a bluetooth transmitter into the sound board, then use any publicly available bluetooth receiver (beats pill, bluetooth speaker, bluetooth high-fi, etc) to boost the sound. I wouldnt want to take away the sound from the engine, maybe have it work more like the HO scale "rolling thunder" effect, where it just adds some bass. Let me know your thoughts!

Not that I am at all sophisticated on sound or Legacy-  but a simple mod to try is to put some sort of baffle around the speaker that exists already.  Some have used tops from paint spray cans and other commonly found devices that project the sound OUT/ down vs. having it get "lost" in the shell.  Cheap, easy- might make a difference.

Mike, I appreciate the input, and this solution does work for some engines, but I am less trying to solve a problem and more trying to add a feature. I really would really like to get some serious rumble and bass out of an M1A or GP35 for example, and both of those are plenty loud enough for any railroad. Also, Ive noticed, most newer legacy engines already have an enclosure on the back of the speaker, keeping the sound waves from diluting in the shell.

Moodster, this idea has potential, but is not new.  There is a member who is an audiophile and/or engineer who has done this,  hooking train sounds up to a stereo system.  I’m sorry I don’t remember who.  A diligent search may turn up the thread that discusses this idea.  Wish I could have helped more.  BTW, you might edit your thread title to include the sound idea and he might pop in.

I think forum member Willygee has done something like this with (I think) a radio transmitter or something like that? I can't recall exactly what he used, but I think it worked well for him. It's been a while since he posted about this, but the thread should still be here somewhere. He tied it into the engine's sounds in some way, possibly the speaker wiring? Sorry I don't remember more about it, maybe he will be by to further explain.

Your idea is to retransmit the sounds to an external bluetooth receiver. In several of the engines I've converted to bluetooth control, I've also included a 3 watt bluetooth receiver board in the loco which when coupled with a good speaker provides good sound. Transmitting the sounds to the receiver provides the ability to choose the loco mounted receiver or an external receiver/speaker and to vary the sounds as well.
