Wow! I lived through those days, a kid in high school from 76-80. LL(now called the L) Jefferson St to 14th St to # 4,5 or 6 to Grand Central #7 to 33rd Rawson. I never tagged or graffitied, I just wasn't brought up that way. I hate to say it, this was the norm and you just accepted it. Doesn't mean you liked it, no matter how cool some of the graffiti was, but you knew the MTA could not do anything about it. They were overwhelmed by it and other problems. Everybody who rode the subway hated it but it was the norm. Us passengers knew nothing could and would be done about it so we just went about our business. My mother would yell at kids writing on trains and all she would get back was a nasty scowl and a finger. At eight years old you really don't take on a bunch of kids when they scowl at your mother, plus she could take care of herself. As much as I hated that era, I just might go ahead and pick up that book, I do like to remember the past. That was a cool Google page you pointed me too. I do remember the days of the TA police with the big German Shepards.
