Yikes!    That center axle on the front truck should be directly under the cab window.  Trucks and fuel tank should all have symmetrical spacing.  The huge gap between the front truck and pilot that makes it looks like the nose is hanging off in space makes me think that Lionel's "new tooling" only meant the plastic body and they used the old SD50 frame.

For reference, here's a side shot photo (3rd from the top) of Rio Grande SD50 no. 5507. As Eccentric Crank notes, and the photo shows, the center axle on the front truck should be directly under the cab window, and there's symmetrical spacing with respect to the trucks and fuel tank, with the front truck tight behind the pilot.

For many, though (and many won't even notice) it's not so bad as to ruin what otherwise seems to be a nice engine. But as others indicate, it's a deal-breaker on a $600+ engine, something in the "can't unsee it" category. I was on the fence with the RG version, so given that I'll probably pass. Too bad, because it kind of looks like Lionel got the orange color about right for a change.

Oh man, this is a newly-tooled locomotive?  How did that front truck pass visual inspection?

I have a Conrail unit on order and my dealer hasn't called yet, but I think this will be the first time I refuse delivery of an engine.  I hate to do it, but I can't pay for that.  I also do not think I can preorder items anymore, too risky.

Very disappointing.

Rob

If you look at the pictures in the catalog, you can clearly see the middle wheel is NOT under the window and there is space between the last wheel and the body of the engine.

I bought two Conrail engines and I was pleased with them until I read these posts.  (Nothing like bursting a guy's bubble!)

I am going to see if I can glue some thin black plastic pieces to extend from the pilot to hid the gaps.

I decided to take delivery of the new SD50, didn't want to hurt the dealer by backing out.  When I opened it, as tom21 said, I found that the truck situation wasn't as bad (to me) as I feared.  Not perfect, but not horrible.  It runs and sounds great, and the Conrail blue and decoration is nice.

Gregcz1, sorry to have projected negativity in my post.  It was a kneejerk reaction and I should have been more patient and waited until I saw the engine.  I'm going to enjoy it and I hope everyone else enjoys theirs.

Glad you like it, its not like anyone else is making sd50 models in O scale except Lionel and mth, and the mth one has swinging pilots and that blind wheel set that is a turn off to me.

Is the price too high for the super base?

Honestly, I was skeptical that Lionel would get it right. I think it is too high a price on the super bass since it doesn't have a motor.

I am very happy with my MTH models. MTH got the trucks and the Missouri Pacific font right. I will post side by photos of the two models with they come. At least Lionel did different road numbers and my super bass model can bring up the rear.

My Lionel one should be here Friday. Here are my MTH ones for y'all to see. I ran them just a few weeks agonat a show.

I have a few on pre-order and look forward to getting them. My bigger issue has been getting the colors close to correct, since I run them, I don't get to twisted when the trucks don't look 100 %.

Regarding the Superbase I have stopped buying them, the $50.00 difference makes buying a fully powered unit more cost effective because I ended up buying a second powered unit when available. The SP Kodachrome's from Lionel requires the Superbase to complete the power, plus they are very, very well done.

Here are a few pics comparing the new Lionel MoPac SD50 with the MTH ones I bought several years ago. #5050 is the super bass model from Lionel.

The details on the MTH model are crisper. The MoPac font on the Lionel is skinnier. The Lionel one is slightly longer and sits up taller and the colors are different shades. The MTH one has better truck details. The Lionel one has better pilot details. There is a gap between the front truck and the steps. MTH has the trucks in the correct spot.

I do not have a home layout so I will have to wait awhile to hear what super bass models sounds are like.

I forgot to mention that I did have a slight "panic attack" when I noticed a piece of "glass" was missing from the right side of the cab window...I was checking the box, the bag, the outer shipping carton, even looking on the floor to see if the piece had fallen out when I took it out of the box!

Luckily, I had purchased a second engine and discovered it too had the same missing glass....I mean "design!"  Phew!
