NEXT (Correction from original post!!)   Saturday April 27

We have a group that meets in NE Ohio, about every month.   We started last November after a Jeff James' post in Fall 2018.  Since that initial meeting we have met several times, each with the following format:

- Local group member sets up

- breakfast at a restaurant chosen by the local member

- topic at breakfast group discussion

- tour or visit to a layout or other site

NEXT Saturday April 27   -   NE Ohio O Gauge Group meets at the Manhattan Deli Willoughby Hills location:

Breakfast 9:30 AM, at Manhattan Deli, Willoughby, OH  https://www.mymanhattandeli.com/

Manhattan Deli Bar & Grille        34601 Ridge Road  Willoughby, Ohio 44094

Then, from there we will go to Bryan Persing's home to see his layout- a modern-age setting, and some learning about weathering and detailing buildings.  Bryan runs full-1/48th scale equipment on 072 and larger curves, different than my layout.  I run smaller, traditional equipment and largest curve is 072.

You might consider joining up with our OGR Forum NE Ohio group.  Send me an e-mail- mikewyatt49@gmail.com, and I'll send you some information.

Our group is turning out JUST the way the majority wanted it starting last November-

- informal

- not a REAL club, no organization, just breakfast talk and look-sees.

-  a look at different aspects of the hobby.  MANY ways to enjoy O gauge!!

Paul,

The Ohioans have included a few of us from Northwestern Pennsylvania.  There are a lot of Forum members over in Ohio.  I take it you a Rock Island fan are from the Midwest.  This visit will be a little over two hours one way for me.  Not bad.  I'm hoping I can attend.

Yeah, I am in Northeastern Kansas.  Looks like about a two DAY drive for me as opposed to your two hours.  Like I say, wished I lived a lot closer.

Based on Mr. Wyatt's past events schedule, it sure sounds like a great meeting every month!

Native NE Ohioan...but I'm in the same boat here in the Kansas City area. Maybe I'll catch you guys at the right time while visiting family back home.

The dates for "the holidays" meetings are not set as of yet - November/ December.  As we get closer- we would be happy to adjust the schedule to a weekend that you are in the area!!  In my experience, every person we meet brings something we all benefit from.

The John Nagurney presentation on repair of Lionel PW locomotives was terrific as one example. (I anyone would like the notes from that- contact me.)

Ditto on the great April 2019 meeting.  The Notes are in prep, and will be sent out to all on our contact list shortly.  I would LIKE to:

(a) set up a train show, probably for August-September at Bertha's/ Kirtland

(b) find hosts for May- June- July- I want to visit a "traditional" O Gauge setup, using tubular track, conventional control and lots of accessories.    Also- all of the layouts we have visited so far are pretty well developed and in beautiful rooms.  I am a Member of the "Brotherhood of Crappy Basement Layouts", so I think we should visit more typical ones- in basements!!   I for one (might be??) intimidated by seeing beautifully set layouts that are NOT typical.  These give us all an example of where we would LIKE to be.

But  I want to see some next to crowded work areas, with joist ceilings, concrete walls, and where we walk to through storage of a lifetime of family junk in boxes!!  (more like mine!)

Content:

There are MANY ways to enjoy three-rail trains:

- Traditional, toy train type, conventional transformer control, either prewar or postwar

- Tinplate

-  post- MPC era- Digital Control, mix of steam and diesel

- modern- all digital control

- Blend

Eras:

-  prewar"- depression, or even 19th century "The General" type trains

- "Transition"- set in as era 1945 - 1959, weathered equipment and buildings

- "Modern" - big curves, full 1:48 equipment, mostly diesels, modern buildings

They are all interesting, and fun!!!  And explore all skill-sets.

Skills:  Wiring, weathering, painting, repairing, layout design, benchwork, adding and upgrading.  There seems to be no end to it.

We want to explore ALL.

Now THAT'S the way to run a train show!

The Northeast Ohioans have been gracious to include us from across the state line in Northwestern Pennsylvania.  I will say one thing I have learned is that Mike Wyatt plans events very well!  I won't be able to attend this event, but I urge everyone to put it on the calendar if you are in the area!

There is still time to register for the Age Steam Roundhouse bus trip to Sugar Creek, OH, on Friday, August 9th. We leave from the Painesville Depot Museum, Painesville, OH. The trip includes a tour of the Roundhouse, the Ernest Warther Museum and a buffet lunch. Don't be left out saying "I should have gone". Please contact me for specifics.

Warther’s Knife Museum in New Philadelphia is an amazing place. The astonishing things Moody Warther carved from wood are almost beyond comprehension. His steam locomotives are simply beyond adequate description (there are lots of them), and the Lincoln Funeral Train is a true artistic masterpiece. As are so many other pieces.

Please take my advice and visit the museum. You will be thrilled you did, believe me. And humbled before artistic genius

btw, their handmade on the premises cutlery is expensive but very, very fine, too. I have a number of pieces. We gave our son and bride a boxed carving set as a wedding gift, that’s how swell it is. Of course, you will exit through the gift shop...

This is one of Ohio’s hidden gems!

Saturday- TOMORROW- is the day!!  I just finished loading up most of what I found (too late) will not fit my layout- including:

- Menard's American Power, used but works- $50 WITH power cord and adapter.  These are hard to find.

- MTH Union Bank - grey   (dusty but not used) $ 30.

- Lionel Coal Ramp (no switch or coal car- but)in original, newer box,  just $ 20??  What??

TWO Lionel Victorian house kits, never assembled- 2 for $ 50!

And more stuff.  Offers will be accepted, and on the spot- deals made. I don't want any of my stuff to go back home.

The group of O Gaugers' ages range from (I think) about 21 to.... a lot older.  From a finished layout, to some just "planning".  Yes- we welcome new people.  It is a very informal group- we just get together about once a month, have a breakfast together (discussing trains!), then go to see something related.  No dues, no officers.

So far-

- we went to a Menards for some Christmas shopping (I had no idea that so many wives "wanted" train stuff for Christmas!) and after visited a primo layout;

- went to Corner Field RR Museum;

- another time to Bertha's Hobby Shop ( hundreds of postwar trains and parts) and had a presentation on repairing postwar trains

- then another member's modern big-city layout;

- my 1950-themed Western PA layout, and;

- most recently saw a great 1/48 scale three rail layout in a second floor room in Hiram OH.

IF you want the notes from a particular of these Meet-ups just e-mail me: mikewyatt49@gmail.com

Attached is the flyer for the next one- Nov 23 in Medina, OH.

Yesterday, I "harvested" several dozen seedoms, for making trees.  These will dry in my garage over winter, and be ready to make trees by spring.

- Start w/ dried seedom flowers

- Airbrush the trunks grey and then the flowers green using acrylic paint.

- Add ground foam "leaves", and secure everything using clear coat

I am thinking of a session where we meet and make trees for the guys to take home with them for their layouts, in April 2021.  Combination of a seedom trees and an airbrushing day.
