If your LED inside the TIU itself is not on, you are not communicating with it.
I recommend a wall wart to feed the TIU.
If memory serves, you need to connect transformer power to Fixed 1 in. If you want to vary your voltage w/ DCS, then jumper over to Variable 1 in, and connect your track to variable 1 Out. Most of us by-pass this minor headache and use a small, power supply that plugs directly into a wall recepticle (wall wort). The other end connects to Aux Power. AC or DC will work, 12-20v. Radio Shack sells them.
BTW, if you want to vary your voltage, you need to set up variable1 (or 2) in the handheld first. I strongly suggest you get and read Barry's book, The DCS Companion. He covers this (and a whole lot more)!

The TIU is powered by one of two sources: The AUX input (12-24VAC 1amp+) or fixed in 1. If you are only running power to the track via Variable 1, you must connect power to Fixed in 1 with jumpers from Variable in 1. this is covered in the DCS manual! READ it!
I recommend Barry's Book. His book has (Hard copy, not download) has been a most valuable resource assisting me into DCS from DCC.
As well as these forums here too. I wished to share a little of what little I've learned so far.
That was it! A jumper to Fixed IN1. I also found that I had to have the track connected to Fixed 1 in order to 'find' my engine. Thank you so much for all the quick responses! You guys are a great help and I will definitely consider Barry's book.

This is EXACTLY what happens if you do not have Variable 1 set up! There is no voltage to the track, so no power to the engine, and no DCS signal back to the TIU. Put a volt meter on the rails (center to either outside rail) and you will see what I mean. So setup Vari 1 in the handheld, then TR, select the name you gave it, and dial up the voltage on the hand held. Don't forget to feed voltage to Vari 1 from the transformer! Set it for 18v or so.

I will definitely consider Barry's book.
Consider??!! What's to consider?
LOL
May I say that I think that Barry's book is a necessity for any serious DCS operator.
He is always candid and helpful on the forum and his book really "nails it." It is answers based on experience. The DCS COMPANION is just as important as the transformer, TIU and Remote for operating DCS equipped MTH trains.
Personally, I learn something every time I log on to the forum or read the book.
Cordially,

LOL, I guess the only thing to consider is what shipping method I want.. and by the sound of it I think I'll go with next day air.
Thanks guys
Hi again. Tou can download the DCS Companion in PDF format from the MTH site. I have my copy on my NOOK TABLET so that I can refer to it in the field ..... Very handy.

I need would like to have a photo of this Jumper. I am having fun today with the engine. It has power, sound etc... but am suspecting it's hungry for amps to move or maybe this jumper thing is it.
I will definitely consider Barry's book.

Barry, I thought of another title for your book.
It's part of a series....
Hey, I already bought it.
